fan blowing through a steam radiator
novice in boston
Member Posts: 1
can you place a small (low power) fan next to a steam radiator to increase the circulation of air through the radiator? will this improve the heat generation of a radiator in a particularly cold part of a house? assuming the fan only ran while the radiator was hot, are there any drawbacks to doing this? are there any off-the-shelf products that do this?
thanks,
Jim

Yes
I did this when I was a kid because my bedroom radiator was too small. The first problem was the room got too hot. I installed a line voltage thermostat to shut off the fan when the room reached 65. Next problem, fans run when there was no steam. That cooled the room pretty quick. Had to add another thermostat to let fans run only when the radiator was hot and the room thermostat called. I used small fans from Radio Shack.
