Metal trusses--particularly those supporting roofs--are often tightly engineered to the expected load. Be vewy, vewy, careful. It's going to depend on the construction of the truss, the design load, the position of the new load and how much you can spread that load among the trusses. Probably best to consult a qualified engineer.
Remember the recent heavy rains in Southern California? Flat roofs (I bet steel truss roofs) were collapsing under the weight of rain. I presume it was raining faster than it could be drained from the roof and they had VERY little additional load factor. After all--no snow and it never rains in Southern California...0 -
CONSULT STRUCTURAL ENGINEER
I will tell you right now, might not work. You will have to span many trusses, and even then definately would suggest getting a Structural Engineer in there to look at it, they are not great with point loads, load has to be tranferred over a great area.0 -
What about...
I-beam. Talk to a local supplier of structural building materials. They may be able to help you along the right path.0 -
Engineer
I also vote for consulting the engineer. Loads are frequently deflection based and based on numerous factors the 850lb could and probably will cause unacceptable deflection even if the truss does not fail.
