is not an approved method of downfiring today's boilers. It will change flue gas flow through the boiler and possibly throw off the CO2 levels at the draft hood. If you need to down-fire we advise contacting our Technical Servives Dept. and they will let you know the proper size orifices to accomplish it. It is not a guessing game but rather a science. I'm also concerned about your initial problem of surging and banging. Adding chemicals to a steam boiler is not going to get rid of the real root of the cause of the surging. We advice a proper cleaning procedure such as skimming or boiling out the boiler and not to leave chemicals in the boiler unless they are needed to treat a PH problem or something similar. A real good cleaning will make a huge difference in performance and it will probably take hours and not minutes. Hope this helps.
