Knuckleheaded

Well I just finished "We Got Steam Heat!" and have learned alot - one thing being that my near boiler piping is not right. The system is one pipe steam. The Riser comes off the top of the boiler to a bull head tee, and connects to the 2 supply mains. The equalizer comes off the riser about 3 inches up from where the riser comes out of the boiler. The equalizer and wet return is copper on top of it all.
To de-knucklehead I know I need to repipe to create a header, with the equalizer coming off the header to help dry the steam. Then feed the supply mains off of the header.
Is it O.K to have 1 take off from the header to a bullhead that feeds the 2 mains? The current configuration is high enough that I could install a header below and still meet the critical 24 inch distance from the normal water line to the header.
With the equalizer being so low to the boiler I know the steam is wetter then it would be with the proper piping. Will the equalizer coming off the header dry the steam out that much more? Or does its function as an equalizer improve being on the header rather then the riser?

Trying to lower my heating bill,
Ray
