I saw Bonnie Rait
over 20 years ago at Merriweather. Leading up her show was Sippie Wallace, a hundred year old blues singer whose song was covered by Bonnie called "Don't Advertise Your Man." Before the show I was walking up from the parking lot with my friends and here comes Bonnie riding in a golf cart driven by a security guard. No one noticed her but me. I'm sure I was a bit bug eyed as the cart pulled a ubee about 15 feet in front of us and headed back to the ampitheater. Bonnie was just casing out the crowd. She looked right at me as I was the only one that noticed what was going on. I smiled at her and she smiled back and that was that. I told my friends there goes Bonnie, but by then they could only see the back of her head, and razzed me for trying to pull their legs. Show was excellent with Sippie's band playing rag time back up to Bonnies "Let me in," song. Good times.

John Prine
Prine played a great show my sophmore year at AU -- Leon Redbone was the opener! -- you're right -- what a wordsmith! He makes you laugh out loud with "Please Don't Bury Me," and others. And if you don't weep like a child at "Sam Stone," then you must be made of stone!
"You may see me tonite with an illegal smile..."

Prine
I am reading this thread saying to myself "Well, they'll never mention John Prine." Very few people know of him, yet he is truly inventive and entertaining. I was in my office looking for trade show photos a few weeks ago when I said "Little pitchers have big ears" and a woman nearly fell off her chair. Another Prine fan. Occasionally you can catch him on Austin City Limits. Check out www.OHBOY.com .
Thanks Wayne-just one more reason to like you!0 -

You're reminding me of the greatness of Prine. Sam Stone describes the effects of drug addiction from the eyes of a child and captures the tragedy of it most poigniantly(sp?) "There's a hole in Daddys arm, where all the money goes. and Jesus Christ died for nothing I suppose." Last Summer I saw JP at Wolftrap in VA. Leading for him was Kris Kristofferson. The irony being JP's first opportunity to tour was leading for KK. KK had heard JP in Chicago and had to have him along on the tour, a break JP never forgot and last Summer returned the favor. WW
