Sending Alan to ISH

And no one has to help if they don't feel like it. I've watched Alan do so much for so many people for so long that I thought it would be a nice way of recognizing him, and showing him that we appreciate him.

It's a human thing.
Retired and loving it.

    The Next Contractor

    Just a reminder:

If you order my book, "The Next Contractor" at www-the-next-contractor.com during August I'll put aside $3 from each book sale to sending everyone's good friend, Alan Mercurio, to ISH next year in Germany. When you order thru PayPal, please add a note "For Alan."

C'mon folks. This is truly a great cause, started out by our host Dan and other good people in the oil heat community.

    Why?

As a lurker, I have seen these posts going on for a while. Did Alan's house burn down, did he make foolish investments, is he poor, why all the charity? I'm not trying to be mean, just understand. If he is so poor he can't go to ISH why should we foot the bill? Hey take up a collection so everybody on the wall can go to ISH. I am positive that we would all enjoy it as much as Alan. Maybe he ought to rethink his career choice if he has to beg. Just a thought from a pay his own way, work his fingers to the bone, provide for his family guy.

    Not so much that

Alan may be deserving of the generosity of the Industry to provide such a wonderful gift. But, I do have an issue with someone posing as benefactor, but, in reality, is a 1", black, slimy, fresh water co-host, with more than generosity in mind. That's how I read it.

    Gentlemen

It's a shame to see two posts like this. Apparently you do not know Alan or the many people he has helped through his charitable work and thankless toils behind the scenes. As for the second post, could you identify the "benefactor?"

    gpyle,

For the record...Alan has given more than his share to this industry, than should be expected of anyone. He is not only a respected EDUCATOR, but a boon to the oil field as a whole.

Alan has just taken on a new job as the trainer for a large oil company in New York, and has managed, somehow to keep his wonderful, and most informative web site, Oil Tech Talk, running smoothly. I'm sure that anyone here who knows Alan, will stand up for his integrity and his ability, to TEACH all things oil.

His personal history is something that is "just that",PERSONAL.

Dan's intention wasn't to make anyone feel that they needed to give to this cause, but to give this wonderful EDUCATOR the chance to see what some of us will never get the chance to experience. I think, (personally) as an educator, it will both enlighten and broaden his own goal....To TEACH!

I may be a bit biased in my thinking, but I've known Alan for a LONG time, and think Dan is giving a great guy a chance to LEARN for himself.

I hope this makes sense, as Alan is one of the best in his field, but a trip to Germany may not be in the cards without the help that we can give.

    Humbly....Chris

I don't know if you know Alan at all however if not then you need not have to donate On the other hand I probably will never get to go to ISH myself as I have found myself it a tight spot due to my wife coming down with Cancer and losssing her job and insurance all at the same time. I cannont even come up with the money I want to go see Dan in Portland however I have giving my small donation to help Alan because I know that when he returns he will share all he knows with me and anyone else that wishes to hear. Keep up the good work Alan.

    Is Alan homeless, poor, starving?

I am sure he is the nicest guy ever. Has he mismanaged his money? Is that our fault? This looks like begging and I personally have worked very hard to get what I have and if I haven't made enough to get to ISH so be it, I guess it wasn't in the cards, but charity? Give to your local shelter or better yet to the families of soldier fighting in Iraq or Afghanistan. To chip in to send somebody the opportunity to walk around plumbing/hvac show is absolutely laughable. Is this the right charity? Really? Rethink your priorities and give to those in far worse situations than needing to look at new toilets on display. Prove me wrong!

I don't concider helping a friend out as charity, Dan decided to try to do a gentman in this trade a good deed and asked our help, to those that don't know of Alan sorry that you have missed one one the best, but I treat my friends as I would wish to be treated. If you do not know Alan as we do then you shouldn't feel you need to contribute. Otherwise why chastise the man for having friends that have a common ground (The Wall) and choose to help out.

No need to prove you wrong. Your posts serve no purpose. And, in fact, the people on this board have contributed to many things (vets, people w/disabilities, cancer research, etc). This is just one more they've chosen.

No one is twisting your arm to contribute.

    Alan

Is someone I've seen, first hand, give freely of his own personal resources when he could least afford to do so - without any desire for recognition. I've seen him do that so often, that I know it's from the heart - not for any kind of recognition or notice. That's why I did not hesitate to contribute to this fund.

Had he not divested himself of funds received (like the huge 50/50 at NAOHSM he won) to help others in need, he could have gone to ISH every two years without batting an eye.

I'm tickled to see so many helping Alan realize a dream. If you can't share in that vision, so be it.

    This was my idea,

and these are his friends showing their appreciation. Please don't denegrate this good man for something that I started. Clearly you don't want to be a part of this, but why be mean?

    Did you notice

more people have stayed quiet on this because I am right, I am the voice of the people. Children die every day and you are worried about sending somebody who hasn't saved his money for a rainy day to look at faucets and sinks. Who's priorities are out of whack here? Not mine. Am I being mean or real? Keepin' it real. Get real there is a big picture to see and ISH ain't part of it. Time is now to save yourselves. Wasn't Dan complaining about ISH a week or so ago? Fees too low, ceiling too low, people sitting behind the screen? If it's that horrible why chip in and send somebody to this mismanaged event? Why, so you can all pat yourselves on your backs and stay blind to the troubles ahead. Give to the families who have loved ones in the middle east, no wait send a broke guy to look around at stuff.

    Are you aware

that there is ISH North America and ISH Frankfurt. I'm not going to ISH-NA, but I wouldn't miss ISH Frankfurt. That's where we're taking our friend. It's a present for all that he's done for others.

No need for you to be a part of this, and no need for you to hide and be mean. There's enough hatred in the world right now without you having to add to it. So long.

    A man with friends

    Is never broke.

Alan is a true friend to all in this industry.

    Rant mode ON:

You ain't squat, gpyle. You hide behind a fake name with a fake/nonexistant email address and hose someone you probably never met. If you were a real human being, you would keep quiet instead of furthering this tripe you're spouting.

Get a REAL life, gpyle. We'll even help YOU!

    Rant mode off.

To the rest of you, my apologies if this was out of line.

I've not met Alan but he is high on my list of people I'd have dinner with just from the posts he's made and the Wallies who call him friend.

Can we not honor a man who has touched our lives pal? I don't think it is about what Alan "needs." It's about what he DESERVES!

    Fuel the Torch!

John I cut and pasted the web adress to buy your book but it didn't come up. Can you repost it?
