Bubble Insulation
Can anyone give me any thoughts on this "bubble type" insulation that many guys are putting under basement concrete floors in new homes? I`m a hot-water heating contractor too, but I`m losing jobs because the other guys are talking the homeowner into-it(cheaper). I`ve always pushed for the high-density sheets. I can`t see how this "bubble stuff" with foil, about 3/8 of an inch thick, can take its place. What do you guys think?

It absolutly cannot compare! Actual R-Values on double bubble are at best R-1. Compare that to ridgid foam at R-9+. If you are having trouble selling to your customers just tell them how much money they are pouring out the door with double bubble. I guarantee it will pay for itself in less than 1 heating season.

Dave, if you are an RPA member, there is a very good technical paper on their website detailing exactly how and why your competitors are using substandard insulation instead of the real deal. Might be a nice print out to add to your quote submittals.0 -
duct wrap too...
I see people using this crap to insulate sheet metal duct. My jobs will continue with 1 1/2 or 2 inch fiberglass ...I'll save the bubble wrap for snow days with my kids ( entertaining stuff ).0 -
bubble wrap
I just got back from Watts Radiant and they are being generous by telling people that it is closer to R-2.
The test that they used was conducted in a vacuum, hows that for spin?
