You should seek the knowledge of another contractor...

    Considering a modulating boiler

Wondering about a modulating boiler in a cast iron system (older style cast iron radiators)...had a contractor say that Munchkin & Lochinbar don't really recommend their units with an all cast iron radiation system because of the dirt which could clog the burner tubes...I had not heard that previously...this contractor has installed both brands by the way. With the exception of one basement room with in-floor heat, the balance of my home is cast iron radiators requiring about a 100k output (from heat loss calculation). Give me your ideas. Thanks. -Sid Bray
  • I agree

I agree with Al, get a real boiler pro as I never heard of old cast iron filled with dirt plugging up the boiler tubings, its the untreated domestic water going into the heating unit will do that!

    Clogging

Actually, the condensing boilers are GREAT when coupled to cast iron radiation- they love the cold water from the returns. If you have any concerns about debris clogging the HX, a Y strainer, or even better, a spiro-trap type strainer should be more than adequate.

    Flush and Treat

If he takes the time, (read:your money), to flush the system remorselessly and add some necessary chemical treatment on start up, you should be good to go. Since you're probably over radiated you could benefit from outdoor reset.
