So how hot is it?

One of our crews started in the dark early this AM in a "bathtub" - concrete walls surrounding them with the sun baking their flesh - no breeze & no electricity on site yet. Trying to stay one step ahead of the GC who wants the radiant tubing installed next week.

Canceled several jobs yesterday including a loft A/C installation. Gonna hit 102 F today (outdoors) & no doubt it'll hit 160 F in that loft. Heat index today said to be 115 to 120 F.

We're switching gears: all those boiler replacements we had lined up for next month will get some attention for at least the demo portion so our guys can remain in the basements for a few days until the heat breaks.

    How hot is it?

It is so hot here that:

I found out the thermometer in my truck reads triple digits, 104* in downtown Traverse City yesterday

People with convertible cars were running around with the tops UP to keep cool

They fried an egg on the parking lot of the TV station last night for the 6:00 news.

Flies left the road kill that was out in the sun alone and concentrated on the stuff laying in the shade.

I measured 71.2% RH at an ambient temp of 93* at 10:30 this morning. That my friends, is SOGGY!

My glasses foggged up when I left an air conditioned building and stepped outside.

We are turning down all A/C work in attics. Period! Darn near killed my self doing that once. Never again.

The cloudless sky isn't blue, it's kind of a brassy silver color.

AND GUESS WHAT!!? It's all headed toward you guys out east:)

    Buncha attic AC work here

But I schedule it for the first call with plans on being out of there by 10 AM. Never had a customer argue with me about a hot attic, especially if I invite them up there with me.

Attic calls will nearly kill you.

The weather you're sending east? It's here most of the season.

(BTW, I swear my contact lens fogged on me once or twice...)

The weather is perfect up here in the great northwest! A cool 60 at night and 75-80 during the day. God I love it here!

    [How hot is it?!]

It’s so hot, I saw a robin use a pot holder to pull a worm out of the ground.

    no joke

I had a roughneck plastic trash drum out in the sun all day today. At the end of the day I tried to pick up the heavy sucker (full of heavy debris), and the plastic was so soft from the heat they both stretched and broke. I didn't realize the handles were so hot because I was wearing gloves, the demo hammer I was using during the day was too hot to use w/ bare hands.

I for the first time emptied my 2 gallon water thermos today myself. Okay I soaked my hat a few times w/ ice water, but I must have drank at least a gallon and a half....

Aychiwawa it was hot, same tomorrow.

I had a customer call about finally replacing that evaporator drain pan in the attic. I called back and after reminding him AGAIN that we should have taken care of that back last fall when he knew it needed to be replaced. He then thankfully said that he understands that I can't get to it now that it is so hot, maybe when the weather cools down a little. Whew! Good thing it was his vacation home......

    71 %

    I'll see your 71 and raise you 20 :)

We hit 96 F in the shade today, and I don't see much shade. Felt like NC at the beach. Humidity must've been in the upper 80%'s. Right now it's 68 deg and 98 %.

I don't feel too bad about it, my son arrived at Parris Island, SC today. I'm betting he's going to be hotter than me.

    It must be hot

Saratoga Race Track closed today because field temperatures reach 105'F. Not sure this has ever happened before. Track lost BIG money today. Opening day take was $3.6 mil on 27,000 through the turnstiles, that's $133.33 per person. I'll bet Ben & Jerry's had a big day. Whew...

    So far....

I'm gonna call it a 4 shirt day.

Scott told us to make our own decisions about the working conditions. The new guy and I were under the gun in a bathroom, trying to get the Climate Panel down before the mud crew HAD to get in there. (they saw the score before we did...and pulled out!)

We got out about 2 hours earlier than expected. but had the job done. These have become BRUTAL working conditions ! Like I alway said...It's FAR easier to put more clothes on than to take enough off.

Sweating like an altarboy on a Sunday morning.... Chris

    It's brutal out there

I spent a little time changing some space gard filters in two attics. I was soaked in the short time I was in there. Tried to spend time in basements when possible. Left a couple hours early to go home and lie in the A/C. Feeling better now. One more day according to the forecast then it will come down a bit on Friday. Josh, you better be careful. We'll all show up at your doorstep looking for work in the nice weather. :) WW

    Heat Stress anyone?

It finally cooled off here today. It was 101 on Monday and I thought that I would have had a cool day roaming around a milk plant. What a mistake that was. It was hotter inside than out. The warehouse was nice and cool, but that was only fifteen minutes of the visit. Lets think pasturization and process equipment. And oh ya, the two 150 hp steam boilers and ammonia compressors were lots of fun to be around. Gotta say though, the blow mold machines for making the milk jugs were kind of interesting. WAY TOO HOT.

Follow this link for some info on dealing with heat stress. It can be a killer.

    cooled off today

The temp today was only 100 and overcast. Morning low of 81 degrees. The temps in the high ninties or above for nearly three weeks. Hoping the weatherpeople are correct and rain tonight and highes only in the low eighties for the rest of the week. The low's close to sixty(sixty what's that??).

The new weatherguy is from LosV said temps are higher at home , but the misserablity index is much higher here. The dew point has been in the upper seventies or low eighies.

Sweating does no real good. Make sure you have lots of cold water and other beverages.

The triple digits will be back just in time to start work next week.

    RELIEF!!!!

Temp is supposed to drop into the 50's tonight. It's 66 right now on my computer screen and we haven't seen that for a week. I know, I know.........I'm whining, but we folk in the north country of Michigan aren't used to 3 digit temps. Heck, 45-50 is short sleeve shirt weather, double that is unthinkable!

The irony of the situation is that heating season service calls are only 4-6 weeks away up here.

    it hit 104* in Richmond

The funny thing is public water supply temps.

All tankless guys, take a look! At my home in Mechanicsville the public water is 87* at the kitchen sink after running ot for 5 minutes!

It starts out cooler from the crawlspace and then warms up as it comes from the street!

    That's

those big blue water towers and shallow trenches.

Also, it helps promote those 5 gallon water cooler sales :)

It's been so hot and humid in Chicago

Tha I haven't been able to go to HeatingHelp.com or even check my e-mail for a week due to 14 to 16 hour days!!!!! :0 And even worse I only was able to go on for about an hour last Sunday between working and family time, and couldn't go on for a week before that.

Mother Nature, Give me a break!

The heat, humidity, and stale air

I put on my plumbers hat last week to install 130' of 4" no hub pipe, 14' AFF in a warehouse for new roof drains.
It was hotter inside than outside. No breeze or openable windows, w/scaffold work where it's hotter at the ceiling. These are the days when I wonder why I choose this trade. And quickly I remember why. Like father, like son. (Thanks Pop!) Tomorrow I get to go on the roof (14" concrete, 4-9" holes)Yipee.
