Pumping Away

Joe; Do I change the size of the volute or increase the RPM's on the pump and if so how? I thought pumping away would eliminate the lack of pressure and flow problems you get when you pump towards the compression tank or when the pump is on the return side. I installed it on the supply side to avoid issues such as this and to get more out of the circulator, higher speed and head. But it didn't change a thing, especially on the return side, to the touch, its not even warm, its better than a 20 degree differential coming back.

    Pumping Away

When I installed a B&G pump on the supply side of one boiler my problems were over it discharged perfectly but when I installed a taco pump on the supply side of another boiler it ran extremely hot and only heated the basement and not the floor zones above it which puzzles me.
Before I had to reverse the direction of flow on the B&G by removing the bolts on the volute and twisting it around. But the taco has no movable parts no bolts ect...
Is it a way to pump-away and prevent the pump from running hot heat the whole house without depriving the floor zones above it even if the entire system has been power purged?

    00

Are you refering to a 00 Taco? They will run hot... What type of hydronic system did you have the problem.

    maybe

your taco didn't have enough head to heat the floor zones. If I understand right, the 007 is pretty good for volume, but not elevation head. Just a thought.

Big Ed, at first I thought the system was air bound {on my forced hot water heating system} so I bled it. Then I isolated each zone brought it up to pressure and forced the air out of the system. Put the boiler back on the line maintaining system pressure still no heat in all but one zone. I replaced the Taco Pump with another Taco Pump but to no avail.

Betz, are you suggesting I replace it with something else ? You got anything in particular in mind?

    Try to purge again.

Are you isolating the other zones and only purging the zone in question? 007 Taco should be ok, but what is the total length of your problem zone? ALso, are you sure that your prv if responding and refilling the boiler to 12 psi?

Mike T,yes with each zone isolated yet and still no heat in all but one out of three zones through out the entire house. And returned the boiler back to system pressure at 12 psi.

    this might help you ....

Establish flow through the zone with the purge pump and connected to the boiler as it is running....when hot water comes back, look at pressure gauge, disconnect the purge pump, look at pressure gauge, let the zone circulate and open either a by pass or small zone on lowest floor level.

talk to me.i have some time before work its like 4 a.m. here.

    reversing flow Taco pumps

    Good Morning
Taco pumps are designed to run at temperatures up to 240 degrees continuously. From the pumps perspective it doesn’t matter if it's on the supply or return. However, you should be pumping away from the expansion tank. If the return temperature is more then 20 degrees differential you could be extracting more btu's from the water, and will need to increase flow. I will be happy to help you with that. Simply changing the orientation of the pump may cause other problems if you have an external check valve, or using zonevalves for a positive shutoff.

Ted; The arrow on the pump is facing in the direction of flow from the compression to the supply side of the terminals unless there's another way I don't know anything about.

Weez, what I did was a little less complex with the piping connections to the boiler. Using the by-pass/quick fill on the PRV I purged the system with water with the service switch off to the boiler including the circulator, module, burner, damper ect...Are you saying power purge it with the boiler firing (controls in service/jumped) and the feed water (fast fill valve) open above (regulator) system pressure?

    Pilot

After putting in a new pilot assembly the pilot flame became uncontrollerable . The spark ignited the flame but the pilot is out of control extremely high.
