Radiator pitch

any cure for radiators that boil. I installes 2 American radiator co. rads and they both boil. New valves wide open, pitched about 1/2 " or better and no obstructions inside. I did change from a 2x1" reducer bushing to a 2x 1.25 bushing. they both boil like a kettle. any ideas?

    Radiator pitch

I assume that since single pipe steam mains require 1" pitch for every 20' of horiziontal run, that the radiators
also need to be "tilted" or is the pitch designed into the radiator internally? Any thoughts on this men??
    thanks for your thoughts

    they need pitch as well

Probably 1" per 10' is more appropriate for counterflow applications, such as runouts and radiators in one-pipe systems. As far as I know, there is no internal pitch.

    you have to pitch it

i'm no expert, but i have an old house that due to some foundation work caused a slight 'lean' in the house. the radiator pointed the way of the tilt started banging real bad. i took a 5 gallon paint paddle and stuck it under the legs, banging stopped.

    boiling

I put about 6 feet of insulation on the horizontal pipes in the ceiling on the floor below and a smaller vent on the radiator. Worked for me. jbee

    smaller vent

My guess is that it needs a smaller vent. That is. either the radiator or the supply pipe is perhaps too small to handle the rate at which condensate is being generated (pitch notwithstanding), and so the water keeps getting pushed back into the radiator by incoming steam as it tries to flow outward. As that incoming steam condenses, you get a bit of boiling going on because of the quantity of water that can't escape.
