Knocking in steam raditors

Check the pitch of the radiators they should be pitched towards the vents. Sometime over time the legs dig into the floor and that evens out the rads and can make them knock.

Good luck

    Knocking in steam raditors

I had a new Union Steam OSB3 (made by Weil-McLain) oil fired steam boiler installed last week. There are several raditors that have a knocking when the boiler starts. The knocking does not occur in all the raditors. I just purchased this home and had the new boiler installed so do not know if there was a knocking previously. Thank you.

    Knocking

is usually caused by water and steam interacting where they shouldn't. The new boiler could be piped incorrectly, allowing water to come up into the steam mains. Or a pipe might have gotten off-pitch during the replacement, allowing water to puddle in it.

Knocking can be fixed. Go to the Find a Professional page of this site to find a steam man who can quiet your knocking.

Should be pitched toward the supply valve if you have 1 pipe steam.
