I have an oil fired boiler, connected to a monoflo system with cast iron baseboard and copper fin tube baseboard mixed. Everything is on one zone. leave it alone or should I change the system?

    Yes,No, Maybe

    Ross,
With the little information given I think yes,no, maybe.
Is the house comfortable now? and how about the amount of fuel used? I would have someone look at your system for idea's and hopefully they will ask you these questions too.
  • Maybe???

    Ross,

That is really an open ended question.

Is your house a very large home with only a few occupants who use mostly a localized area for a majority of the day? Then yes it should be zoned to avoid heating the extremities when no one is there.

However, if you have a modest size home that is usually fully occupied, and it is comfortably heated with the single zone, then additional zoning would not have any appreciable return to you.

John was correct, you must have someone look at the whole picture for you, not just what "could be done" to your system.

Thanks for your advice, I don't think I am getting the proper

temperature and flow through my system. I am wondering if I could get better flow and higher temps to cast iron baseboards by using a more direct piping layout. I have a fully occupied 1500 sq ft dwelling that really was not comfortably warm last winter and I felt I had high fuel consumption. I have had 2 different contractors come out last winter and they didn't think anything was wrong. They seemed knowledeable about the burner but not the piping layout. I think I am going to have to figure this one out on my own.

Think about where you have the cast iron and where you have the fin base board. the fin will heat quickly and cool off quickly. making the temp in the room have hills and valleys in the heat cycle. the cast iron heats and cools more slowly. it holds and releases heat over a longer time and leavels out the heat cycle. what room has the fins? is it the room with the stat? the room with the stat is the whole house to the boiler. The stat will respond to the type of emitter in that room. just some thoughts. hope it works out for you.
