Pipe Insulation

This may be a dumb question. I need to buy pipe insulation for my steam system. How do I measure the diameter of the pipes correctly?

Well, the easiest way...
... is to take a tape measure and wrap it around the pipe until it overlaps. Divide the length by pi (3.141) and you get the actual outer diameter. Then use a lookup chart or ask a knowledgable person what the nominal pipe size is for the actual pipe diameter you measured.
IIRC, pipe diameters are measured from the inside, so you have to subtract 2 wall thicknesses (i.e. 2x 1/8" or whatever it is) to come close to the nominal number.0 -
Thank you

Far easier
Mini Rocket, especially if there's insulation on the pipes. Just slit the pipe with a knife and slide the tool into the slot.Retired and loving it.0
