pump purge question

I'm assuming you mean a fuel pump on an oil burner? If so you would use fuel oil to prime the pump.

    It says in my book "to protect the pump gears it is advisable to lubricate the pump prior to purging a lift system and to apply oil through the vacuum port". What kind of oil do I use for this?
