Cleaning hand tools

to clean off! As you already know :) We use it on waste oil lines and find WD40, or a bit of gasoline on a rag (dangerous) works before the stuff has a chance to set up. After it is set up, it's a real bugger to get out of small cracks like that.
I use it only when absolutely required. The blue Leak Lock and teflon tape works well for me on pipe threads. It's generally the "bad" threads that are the big challange. Those are more and more common these days, even on store bought pipe and fittings.

What is a good cleaner for
my hand tools?
I had a few small electric boilers installs lately, and did all the near boiler piping in black. I felt more assured by doping the joints with the "Black Death" - Permatex.
Now a couple of my crescent wrenches' worm gears won't turn anymore, and one of my monkey wrenches' teeth are so full of the stuff, that it just slides on the pipe!
any suggestions????

how about
How'bout PVC pipe cleaner or Brake-kleen or acetone? I use pvc cleaner on a rag or de-greaser that I use on oil burner stuff. I think de-natured alcohol or paint cleaner stuff might work too.

all of the above are good
jsut one more thought, we always keep the hand towels like hurcules in the trucks, they work well along with the old standby wd-400 -
Can you burn it off? :-)

Like Jeff said
WD40 is good for cleaning anything except maybe the cat. The hercules rags are good for the blue thread sealant I like to use. WW

I use gasoline...
when cleaning my cat. Drying time is a lot less and I avoid the need to de-fur the kitty afterwords. Got BIC?
Make sure you do it outside. You don't want to make your house smell like the Monster Garage...
(tongue planted FIRMLY in cheek to those of you who are fortunate enough to own cats...)

fingernail
polish remover, which is an easy way to buy acetone or lighter fluid which is naphtha. See if one of those will soften up the permetex. ME acetone should keep your cats ears clean. Best Wishes J.Lockard0 -
I hate that "black death" stuff.
They should paint bridges with it. It NEVER comes off.
We use carb cleaner and old copper cleaning brushes.
Good luck.0 -
When I get that kind of build up on my tools...
I take them to my garage and start up the 6" bench grinder with the wire wheel on it and scrub off everything I can. Then I start by using the abrasive hand cleaner cloths, move up to the WD-40, nail polish remover, and finally good ole unleaded if necessary. I would bet that your pipe wrench will have to be power wire brushed first to make any head way towards usability.0 -
Another Good Product
Is Stewart Hall's spray "Zipp".An electrical degreaser, it seems to clean most ooky messes with ease. Works good on hands (irritates a little) and great on tools with a small brush. Also will takes those "ghosts" off of the whiteboard in your office if you spray a little on a rag first.0
