Keyspan use to do that a while back, sometimes they have the boiler for $299.
Last September when I swithced from oil to gas (new owwner/old system) I received a free Burnham Series 2 from Keyspan.

Does this exist anymore
I remember once upon a time I saw ads for a "free" boiler from the gas company if you switched from gas to oil. Is that offer still in effect? Has it ever been? Was I dreaming? I'm in Massachusetts, so the local utilities are KeySpan and NSTAR for me (I would be with NSTAR).
It's not that I don't like the oil, it's just that I thought the idea of the boiler coming free was pretty novel.

Yes, such programs definitely did exist after the big new natural gas pipeline to the East coast opened. I have no idea if they are still available.
From the natural gas prices in that area that are quoted here, the current rate still seems to include some cost for those "free" boilers and furnaces...0 -
this is just a subtle reminder
that there is no such thing as a "free boiler".
The only reason someone would offer you a boiler at an artifically low price is because that appliance would cause you to buy their fuel, and more of it. You and all the people who go for this are certainly going to be paying for the "free" boilers in your utility bills. Perhaps more importantly even than that, all the people who did not opt for a "free" boiler are going to be paying for your boiler too.
I guess this is the other face of "the American way".0 -
no such thing as free
Your point is very true. In any event, if I'm going to be paying for this "free" boiler whether I get one or not via higher gas bills (since most of the house is already heated via gas), I might as well get a boiler out of it, too.

I agree Fred, for me was the trouble of removing a 550 UST with previous owner and given the fact gas is higher, I wanted low maintainance and worries about tanks in basement or freezing or refilling. For me was mainly preference.

Is it Free?
Is it free? You get a free boiler but does it come with FREE installation? Is the oil system, the oil tank, and any remaining oil removed FREE? Do you have a choice of boiler or do you get a plain Jane? When the time comes it needs service who do you get the service from? Compare this to the cost of a new oil system and we know there is a lot of service available for oil. Just a few points to ponder.

Free!
Eat all the hard boiled eggs you want, as long as you pay for the beer. All you can eat steamed crabs for one price! As long as you pay for the beer to chase them down. Notice how spicey they are? What a deal. "Yessirreebob. I ate 3 dozen for the price of 1. And that keg of beer sure tasted good. Boy, did I take that crab guy for a ride."
So call your local gas distributor. Tell them to bring on your FREE boiler. Sign on the dotted line. Pay $4,000.00+ for their approved contractor to install it. Don't worry about the old oil tank. Your former oil company will pump it out & remove it for free. They're such nice guys. Pay for the installation on your new gas bill. Only Prime + 3.5%. Or lock it in @ 9, or is it 10%, on the declining balance. Oh yeah. Read the fine print. All that stuff about paying the full retail price for the boiler + balance of installation cost if you decide to convert to another fuel before your commitment is up. What a deal.
Boy. You sure took those gas guys to the cleaners! P. T. Barnum had it right. Wonder who he was talking about?

NStar programs
Check out this NStar link - http://www.nstaronline.com/customer_service/gas_heating/convert.asp or try gasnetworks.com. As stated nothing is free, but rebates are available.0 -
I would dare bet
The "freebie" is not a high efficiency type. Which of course causes you to consume more of the gas that is in the process of going up 50% in cost. Hhmmmm, I wonder if they have any fancy pencil pushing type guys figuring out the details of their "free" boiler program?
Wise up!0
