Used to have one of those where I lived in the city; lasted until the mid 1980s. converted from coal to oil then gas at some point--a steam boiler. In its last days tenants all had to take turns all night keeping finger on the burner on-switch to keep heat going.

Smith tube boiler
This the one?0 -
don't know if 'twin smith' same origin as hb smith.
Thanks Fred. I see your boilerl has several names: hb smith, libby and blinn, and mills, etc. Looks like the same configuration with the two doors. Hard to believe these monsters were once brand spanking new.

Smith Water tube
It's not mine, but in an old big three-story house in West Hartford. Water tube boiler, surely more than 100 years old, converted several times now oil, tests at 86.5% combustion efficiency. Very low pressure two-pipe, pressure just 10 inches H20, beautiful old radiators, no noise.0
