Gerry Gill and Steve Pajek's latest work of art

Gerry and Steve's install is a work of art, as usual. However, Gerry's disposable camera provided pictures that did their masterpiece an injustice. What say you, Steamhead???

    Beautiful workmanship!

What's that insulation? It looks like the old "a-word" stuff.

    Very clean and impreesive install!.

Ya' know, it makes you pause for a moment when you look at this picture compared to the days of old. As in when the boiler dominated the scene, now it's the piping and insulation.

If that were in my basement my neighbors would think I'm nuts, 'cause I would be dragging them over to see it and brag!

    GREAT JOB!

From another "home owner", ( I'm not simple, at least I don't think so ;-)".

  • Tony, you have a much better camera

which makes the job look even more impressive.

Now we can see what happens when you put your drop header on steroids ;-)

Our neighbors definitely think we're nuts -- even I thought the big huge pipes were impressive. My neighbor told me I needed to take a vacation away from Tony and get out more.

Thats quite a boiler. How big is your home, or should I ask: how many square feet of radiation do you have? :) You are fortunate to have these guys in your area.

response to square footage question -- you'll be sorry you asked

We're very anal . . . attached you will find a description of height, depth, columns, sections, type, etc. which give the EDR and, as there are two supply lines coming off the boiler, the square footage for each line. The short answer to your question is approximately 1,280 square feet of radiation.

    I love heating freaks!!

Actually, not freaks at all, it's just the way it should be done. Your work and documentation serves as a "How To" for all who take the time to study it.

    NICE! ............... VERY NICE!

its just 1'' fiberglass on the pipe

nothing prettier than flange unions installed correctly on steam piping and headers. i despise unions larger than 2 ". the man is a real steamfitter who knows how to use a ruler & level. bravo !!!

    gaskets 5 bolt flange

I see you have used 5 bolt flanges on the main manifold.
On the Trane two pipe system (see post just above yours)I am repairing I had to replace flange gaskets on 8 inch O.D. 5 bolt pattern 4 1/2 diameter pipe. previous person had used rred/pink rubber gasket material which deteriorated to aa leaky state :-)... I could not find ANYBODY that even heard of a 5 bolt pattern flange.. lol.. and now I see you built your dream system with same 5 bolt (square head) pattern flanges. My question is where did you find steam rated gaskets READY MADE for these flanges? Tnx for your help. Alfred

    the value of piping?

This is very impressive, a work of art! Is this kind of drop header really necessary when you are only dealing with 370 sq. ft. of steam? Manufacturers spec -- single 2" piping.

I have to ask, is this worth giving up a trip to Costa Rica?

    Respectfully,
    MQ

This job will be used as a template for my next steamer.
Question: Do you need the companion flanges on both the risers and the header?

    Gas train thought

Perhaps it's above the picture but a gas shutoff above the down pipe union would make the system really easy to service the gas train. Also, for safety I like main gas shutoff 5' above the floor.

you don't need them on the risers

but boy do they make it easier to install the piping..its a little extra money well spent..saves much aggravation.
