New Gas stove

This is my first heating season with a gas stove. Some of you have graciously answered my questions here before regarding my boiler, staple up and baseboard. Since we have gotten the new stove we have noticed a VERY marked increase in gas usage. Granted we allowed that we would have more usage, but to double it? We don't do alot of baking and a minimum of stovetop cooking (just the two of us now). I always thought that electric stoves were costly to run. The boiler is running just fine.
Thanks! and Happy Thanksgiving!

    Gas stove

A gas cooking stove should basically use no gas. I know technically it uses some, but not enough to register on the bill. As an example, my January natural gas bills have usually been around $230. That is for boiler, dryer, stand alone water heater, and gas stove. In June I usually pay only around $20. And I am still running the dryer, water heater, and gas stove. If your use doubled suddenly, I would have a PRO inspect your boiler sooner rather than later!!! I can't believe the stove has anything to do with it. Another frigtening possibility is an undetected gas leak. Please be careful!!

Thanks for the reply Jason. We had the Gas meter replaced this past spring. We had the gas company out before that to check for leaks, none found. I installed the boiler last fall and it ran fine all winter. I will call them out again to check the meter outside.

    little gas

Since the stove is on so little the gas is nothing. A top burner may be 8ooo btu and the oven maybe 25K but on for how long since the oven stat cycles the burner. If the piping to the stove is new maybe you have a leak that's venting to somewhere you can't smell it. Your meter has test dials. The ones on the bottom with marks but no numbers. If you want to shut off all gas loads and watch the test dial for 10 min. if it moves you have a leak. If you have a gas log or log lighter I would make sure they're off.

I will check out those test dials for sure. Thanks for the info! I am calling around locally for a Pro to come out and check my boiler.

    Ed

Even if the boiler's burner was seriously out of adjustment, I am still having trouble believing your usage could go up that much. Especially since it is only a year old. The more I think about it, I'm leaning towards the gas meter leaking outside? Of course without being there it is hard to say. Something smells funny here.... I would get someone out soon just for safety's sake. Let us all know what it turned out to be! Regards, Jason.

    Need to be specific

Is it your usage MCF that is doubled or is it your gas bill $/month?

I was mistaken on the amount of gas, it is the cost, not the usage. I misunderstood my wife, (she does the bills). I have the gas company coming out to check the meter. And after the holiday I will have a Pro come out and check out my boiler. As fate would have it I found a Crown dealer locally who will come out and check it out.

    Thanks

    Robert,

My wife found a classic IRON gas stove on a Freecycle site that was closeby over the summer and wanted to go get it. I pointed out to her how heavy Cast Iron was and the thing might make its way through our floor, and she agreed. Not that those old stoves aren't treasures, but...
