Check the thread for balancing steam mains. That's the job.

I recently replaced a Dole 3C main vent on my one pipe steam system. I am currently using Gorton #2. I am getting a small amount of water spurting out of the valve some of the time. (This also occured with a Vent-Rite 75 I used briefly). Is this normal? The return pipe gets very hot. I'm assume that is normal, but I'm an amateur!

The return pipe gets steam hot? or condensate warm? Take a picture of your return at the main vent and post it. Show how it enters the floor return also.

I wouold say the return pipe is steam hot. Enclosed is a picture of the main vent. I also included a picture of the end of main where it turns into the return line the return line.

FYI the main is ~40ft (2in nom) with a ~13 ft return (1in nom).

    At the very least...

the vent should be moved back about 15" from its' current position. As it stands now, steam is hitting that fitting and throwing water up into the vent. Another, better option would be to have it installed 15" from the end of the main, up high.

Is this a 2 pipe system? Radiators have an input and an out put?

KC is the vent stuck, old, or dirty? Rust chunks can blow into a vent and stick them open. They should not leak steam ever. If the vent is newer you can remove it and wash it out, you can also boil it in vinigar if it is crusted up. If old replace it. You may want to check to see if you have enough venting by posting the diameter and length of your main pipes.

This is a one pipe steam system. I agree that the vent is placed incorrectly (at the end of the main). I will need to have a plumber move it back 15in. I have seen that dimension in drawings. I placed it where the old one was for convenice to see if it improved my performace. The vent I replaced was not venting at all. I have some other problems with the system since the boiler was replaced. I need to find a good steam contractor in my area (Marlboro, MA).
