UPS

I work in a computer environment, and there is APC UPS hardware EVERYWHERE - rack mounted units in the server room, individual units near critical computers, etc. I have hardware at home running off of an APC UPS.
Good stuff, and that one that you pointed at in your post should run for a long time with a small load, which I would think the Viessmann electronics would be. They have a table that shows how long it will run for a given load.
Full details on that model from APC's web site are here:
<a href="http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=SUA1500">Smart-UPS 1500</a>
One thing to factor in is that the batteries in these have a finite life span. I think they usually claim 3-5 years. They are replaceable.
Hope that helps.

UPS
Uninterrupted Power Supply
We recently installed a Vitodens boiler in the boonies where the electrical utility is unreliable. There have already been a couple of times when interruprions/surges have caused problems with the internal programming.
Viessmann recommends a UPS to smooth out the voltage; 1,500 VA and want to know if any of you have experience with ones made by APC called "Smart-UPS":
http://reviews.cnet.com/APC_Smart_UPS_1500VA_USB_Serial_UPS_1500_VA_UPS_battery_lead_acid/4507-3055_7-31304742.html?tag=nav
or perhaps you can recommend one that has a proven reliability.

Other Brands
There are also other brands just as reliable. Belkin is one. Pick one with enough "ooomph" (amp hours) and also with voltage regulation/line conditioning.

APC UPS
When sizing a UPS, one must determine the load it will protect and size the UPS accordingly. Also, the length of the outages must be taken into consideration along with the load to determine max. run time. If a power outage lasts 30 min., no use installing a UPS that carries the load for 20 min. There are also environmental concerns such as ambient temp. and humidity which could affect the operation of the UPS. Go to www.apcc.com for full specs. on all their products.0 -
UPS
Thanks everyone; It really does help. Viessmann suggests a min. 1,200 VA for boiler alone; 1,500 VA preferred if you've got circulators, mixing valves, etc. plugged into the Vitodens.
Paul C.: Good suggestions about runtime and ambient temperature. The boiler is in the garage which can get quite hot and some of the UPS's don't want to see more than 105°.
kk: Good tip on battery life.
