Baseboard heating problem

I have a baseboard heating system in my house that uses natural gas. I don't know much about it but I am having problems with noise. Every time the heat turns on I can hear noise in the system "it sounds like water boiling or air pockets in the system". What can cause this and is there something I can do without calling a repairman as I really can't afford it. Thanks in advance for any info you can give.

Kathy, there are a number of things that can cause noise in a baseboard heating system. Air is one thing, and water nearing its boiling point is another. Go down to the boiler when the thermostat is calling for heat. Wait for the burner to shut off, then check the water temperature. This will be indicated on a gauge located on the top or side of the boiler. Also on this gauge will be the pressure in the system. Check and record both readings. The system temperature should be no higher than 190-200 degrees. The system pressure should be 15-20 pounds per square inch(psi). Check them and get back to me.
