Is it worth the trouble to skim two buckets each morning?

Sounds like you are having the exact problem I am having with my brand new boiler that was installed on an old one-pipe steam system. Everyone tells me to keep draining and flushing and eventually it will get better. It is taking forever. I am getting tired. Of course I am not sure that the way the new boiler was piped is not contributing to the problem and the manufacturer of the boiler refuses to send a rep down to check this out. Good luck and please post if your problem eventually is solved.

Is it worth the trouble to skim two buckets each morning?
I hate to beat a dead horse, but I'm getting tired of skimming my new boiler. Now that it's cold, I've started to skim two buckets in the morning, followed by draining to the water line with the low-water cut-over drain.
Is this a sensible thing to do, or a waste of time? I'm totally at a loss at why this is taking so long.

dump wet leg / return...
Steve,
Hang in there, I know it's a @#!*%, you'll get there.
It might help if you dump the "wet leg" after a few days
of steaming.
Remember, your new boiler is "steam cleaning" the rads and
the piping.
A one pipe steamer is, by nature, an "open system" and "rust
never sleeps".
With the better steam production that the new boiler is capable of it's little wonder that your getting quite a bit
of crud back, this is quite normal.
Also remember, that you are now a "home fireman" and are
taking note of all the things that may have been done over
the years "but were'nt.
Regards and Happy Steaming, db

make up water
The fresh water you are adding on a daily basis may be a part of your problem. I did say "may"be. Do you have an "oil film" problem on the surface or rust problem? Skimming helps get rid of the crap that floats, draining gets rid of the crap that sinks to the bottom.
Did you try any chemical warfare, like Squick or other compounds? Might help. The only reason you need to remove any water is when you have a mechanical float LWCO like a M/M 67 or 47-2. You flush these to insure that the switch works. The idea is not to add or remove water.

Let's clarify this a bit!
The manufacturer does NOT refuse to send a rep down to see what the problem is. If I recall correctly, you stated on another site that your contractor has gone out of business and our person told you he needs to be there with a qualified installer. This is neccessary so that if he sees something that needs to be addressed, it will be crystal clear in the eyes of the person who is there to do it and that is the installer. Feel free to contact me through e-mail and I'll speak to our representative for your area. Maybe he can find someone who is willing to help you. Hope this helps.
