Water heater for small radiant

And would you connect into the drain side if you wanted to also use the WH for DHW?

I looked through Danfoss's, AO Smith's and Flat Plate's web sites for info on the WHHX package you mentioned but don't see anything. Any chance you might have a link? You ought to try a google on WHHX. I've never had so many foreign language hits. :)

Thanks, hot rod.

We have a small radiant job we'd like to use the existing WH

This is a small addition. About 5,000btuh heat loss. I'd like to use the existing WH with a plate heat exchanger and three way thermostatic valve to provide the heat source. I haven't done this before and I'm not quite sure on how to pipe the WH to Hx side.

We need a non-ferrous circ. Would it be better to pipe the return via the fill or into the drain connection? What about check valves? Would you run any soft of air removal device on the WH side of the system?

    Yes

you need a non ferrous circ on the "A" or WH side. No need for any air elimination as this side is "open".

Danfoss, Flat Plate. AO Smith, and maybe Wirsbo offer a neat package pre plumbed WHHX package for this purpose. Danfoss even has a bit of a reset control with outdoor sensor built in. It pulses the A pump to control the outlet temperature to the radiant, as I recall.

Four pipe connections and away you go. I like to tee into the drain connection with a brass tee to get a good mix through the tank. Tee into the top hot side for the other side of this loop.

I've built a few HX systems for Polaris/ radiant installations, but they don't look near as neat as the prebuilts :)

    Hydrobonics aren't spoken

in lands where HWHX or WHHX are words :O)

It sounds like they could be Navajo abreviations also.

What think you, Wheez, I just know you're going to put in 10cents worth & I can't wait.

I just watched the movie, too much Nick Cage & not enough Navajo.

    I say the AO

Smith one at ISH Boston, here is the pic. The Danfoss I have actually used.

Isn't Taco bringing out a Mixing Block/ HX product?

The main reason I use a tee at the drain connection is to get away from pumping through the dip tube. not a big deal if you rather make both HX connections at the top of the tank.

The Danfoss I used was a ZCPSM2 HX07 a snowmelt number actually. Also a pic of a prototype larger DHW milti zoned HX package. Not sure if this one made it to production?

If you build your own I highly recommend you build in some Webstone purge valves to acid clean the HX. Flat plates on hard DHW systems may need a yearly acid cleaning.

    Taco X box

I just attended a Taco presentation by David Sweet and they have some new great products for adding radiant. The X box has a bonze pump for domestic, cast iron for radiant and a heat exhanger attached along with weather respond! WOw what a great product-all in one. Just pipe and play. Something else they had was a weather respond 3 way mixing valve and circ pump with the same control. Cool stuff. David is a very excited person with lot's of knowledge. Hopefully this helps
