Uncoupling membrane

It is used under ceramic tile to uncouple the floor from the sub floor so the ceramic floor floats and is not so rigid. It's plastic, shaped like a waffle and is about 1/8" thick. I am concerned about how much R value it has, and it's restriction to the heat tranfer between a radiant floor to the tile above. The product is German, made by Schluter. WW

    I have

And it looks like pretty good stuff. I don't beleive it has hardly any R-value.

One of my customers owns and operates a tile supply house. He showed me the material once.

    Have it in my home...

... presumably, you mean the orange DITRA-series, right?

Looks too thin to be of any large thermal consequence, considering that it's polyethylene. At least, when compared to wooden floors.

I saw no mention on their web-site about R-values, perhaps someone else has better eyes. Dow mentions that their Ethafoam product is about R2.5/inch, so it stands to reason that the thermal resistance could be less than R0.5

A call to Schlüter might clear it all up.

    This product

is commonly refered to as crack isolation membrane. It is usued on most all of our jobs and more specifically when larger tile or stone is used (18"x18" or over).

    Schluter Ditra

I have this product installed over a radiant heated floor. Great product to use when setting tile and I have noticed no problem with the radiant heat in this room.
