    Solar Heat Exchange Systems

Living in Laramie Wyoming I find many sunny days even though the temperature is often well below freezing. What options/fluids are recommended for use in an exchange system for in-floor radiant and domestic hot water heat?

    Hydronic anti freeze

Look for DowFrost HD. It is a non toxic propylene glycol. It has a bit higher operating temperature, and a better inhibitor package than some of the less expensive brands.

Should be able to buy it in 5 gallon buckets. Try their website under heat transfer fluids to find a dealer. I used to get it the Salt Lake area from heating supply houses.

Be sure to have someone run a cleaner through the system first. A dirty system will deplete some of the "stuff" blended in the glycol.

    TSP?

I have always flushed my systems with TSP. This gets all the flux and any oils out of the system? If you do it on a sunny day it works great-the sun heat the TSP which activates it to clean much better.
    Good luck Jeffrey

    The best hydronic cleaner

is by far the Rhomar. it is safe for multi metal systems, like todays condensing boilers.

for a simple copper solar, yeah TSP (flush it out well) or any of the hydronic cleaners.

Hercules makes one, as does Rectorseal, Utility, just about any plumbing chemical company has a hydronic system cleaner.

Hercules also has Sizzle, an acid based cleaner for systems that have hard water deposits. It's also sold as a drain cleaner but the label states it is safe for potable water system cleaning, water heater tanks, etc.
