Helper

I always go out of my way to make sure I am nice to them. Even when they screw up something for the 10th time. I have trained atleast a half dozen guys over the years that once they can actually go on their own they quit. No thanks no nothing. They quit and go with the first place that can pay them 50 cents more an hour. Just the way it is I guess. I have a new helper in my truck now and its a long difficult process. Even had to show him how to use a pair of pliers.

Helper
My helper quit this morning steming from a disagrement we had last night. The problem was more about him loosing his temper on the job than what he was actualy doing wrong. I always treated him with respect never swearing at him or embarrasing him in front of other trades. He just lost it when I tried to correct him on a job he was trying to do. So after 9 months of treating him like a human not dirt like I was treated this is what I get. I get told he was going to find somone who treats him better. Maby I should start being a jerk and i'll be able to keep sombody around for mor than a year. What is wrong with the 20 somthings these days.Sorry I just had to vent thanks.0 -

Unfortunately the younger generation does not see the value of steady employment as well as learning a trade.I remember being freash out of trade school and working as a
helper my boss was so tough he could almost bring you to tears. But I learned more those first few years and took more skills with me than I did in the next ten years! Plumb, square, tight and correct, those were the words I heard every day....To bad I had to read his obituary last week...Thank you Len Pierce for all you taught me.0 -
I'm not sure
Sometimes a good look in the mirror is quite revealing. I once had a helper that told me, that I didn't treat him right.Well I got all pissed and let him know that he was wrong, then I left the job went for a ride, had a cup of coffee, I then went back to the job site and thank the young man for being honest with me an apologized. From that point on we had a good relationship, I would listen even if I thought he was wrong, I listened, I may offer advice if I felt he may need it, but for the most part I respected his opinion. Nowadays we run into each other, he has a nice business doing plumbing and oil burner service, good kid always takes the time to introduce me to his men.

More with Honey than Viniger
Just my thoughts and the way I have allways run my company.
Am I Mr. sweet and wonderfull all the time NO. I loose my temper and act like a A&& sometimes. I always make a point of talking it out as soon as possible. Problems have a way of germinating and growing into a larger problem.
Sit down with your guys every once in a while and ask how things are. What are thier expectations. I truley belive it is in our best interest to see our selves as others do. Many times I have said " I never knew that bothered you".
I agree, this younger generation has a difficult time with hard work and showing up on time. On the other hand, I have a couple of young guys who work HARD.
It up to us to show them the way. Be a mentor more than a Boss. Care about thier needs and they will care about yours.

The Golden Rule
How would you like to be treated? I am assuming well. When you are talking about a helper, you are basically talking about a " student". Every school or training class I have been to, I cannot remember any of the instructors yelling at me. Even in basic training, when in the classroom enviroment the training instructors did not yell. Poor working conditions, poor pay, and lack of education does not exactly draw the cream of the crop. Now if the helper is just a piece of crap then get rid of them and save your sanity. As far as this generation being lazier than the last, I don't think so. They just don't wear cool clothes and listen to cool music like we did. Besides we don't need a helper to yell at, thats why they have partnerships. Plenty of good abuse to throw around there.
