spill switch

I put in a Burnham IN4 steam boiler almost two years ago. Two times last year it went off and when i got there the spill switch was tripped. I reset the spill switch, checked the draft. Ran the water heater at the same time, checked the vent damper and everything was fine. I couldn't get it to happen again so after the second time I replaced the spill switch. Everything was fine for the rest of the winter. Now it happened again last night. What else should I be checking. Everything is new, the chimney is lined. The horizontal flue is a little bit longer than mormal but it's not too long by code. Every time i go back everything is working the way it should.

  • Ask questions like...

Do you have GenAir grill, or a whole house fan, or has the wind been blowing, were all teh exhaust fans in the house and the dryer running at the same time today?

Generally speaking, if the spill switch tripped, and you replaced it and it continues to trip, there is a valid reason. The problem is, the condition is not there when you're there.

Look around, ask questions, perform a worst case combustion zone depressurization test and see what happens.

As a possible sleuth solution, install a HOBO temeprature recorder with one of the sensors located at the spill switch in question. It will tell you if its a fluke, or tied to some kind of time of day value.

The answers are there, you just have to find them.
