balancing vent-rite radiator vents in an apartment

No one has answered this post so I will give it a try. You could do as you state; if that doesn't work you could install TRV's on the warm radiators which would close them down once they reached the temp wanted.

    Hi--

My girlfriend lives in an apartment with one-pipe steam.
The apt is on the third floor, and has its own oil boiler
in the basement. I can't touch the boiler or main vents,
but they are likely to be in ok shape.

There are 5 radiators with vent-rite adjustable air valves. There are 3 big rooms, one of which has the thermostat,
and 2 bedrooms, which are smaller, and not well insulated.
The radiators seem mostly sized to the rooms they are in.

My girlfriend would like the 2 bedrooms to warm up faster and be warmer (at least at night; no reason to keep
the big empty rooms warm at night). How should I adjust the
vents so the smaller rooms away from the thermostat get more
heat? Open the vents in the small rooms a bit wider and
close the vents on the big rads down a bit?

    --thanks very much

  • That should work

and if you want to shut down a rad completely, turn the vent adjuster all the way down.

    seems ok

    Thanks for the replies!

I thought about TRV's if things weren't working the way I wanted, but fiddling the air vents indeed seems to be working out ok heat-wise. No idea about efficiency, I might post about that seperately...

    Thanks again...
