You can't have enough when it comes to flushing out an old steam system.
The 1st clue that this was going to be a marathon event was during the demo, the 4 sections with holes in the top large enough to put your fist thru got me concerned.
The 2nd clue was the oozing mud that was dropping out as the old boiler was being dismantled.
My final wake up call was the goop being flushed out of the wet returns.
We have been skimming, flushing and dumping for 8 solid hours. Not done yet.

Thanks
for the encouragement.
No short cuts on this one.
This isn't the first time somebody went thru this routine.
I found 1 1/2" gate valves installed about 40 years ago to isolate the wet return from the boiler and provide a place to gather the mud before returning to the boiler. With out this I'm not sure it would be possible to clean the system.
