gas furnace vebt spraying water
i have gas powered steam radiator heat.
the furnace has just started spewing out water from an air vent that is positioned about 2 feet over the furnace.
the water in the furnace then goes too low, shutting off the furnace and heat. the water startes spraying when the readiators get hot.
recently one radiator stopped working, amd i bought an air vent with a bigger vent, and this seemed to remedy the problem.
i have no idea if these are related, but thought i would mention.

First things I would check. 1 the level of water in the boiler (valve or auto feeder not closing completely) 2 is the vent on the return (clogged return)There was an error rendering this rich post.

JK,
Thanks for the advice. Can i clarify exactly what I should check.
1) the level of water in the boiler: does this refer to the water tube that illustrates the level of water. if so, this is consistent with the light and automatic shut off system that stops the boiler when it gets too low.
there are valve at the top and bottom of this tube. is this what you are referring to above, suggesting that they should be completely closed.
2) i have no idea what this means. the vent is connected to a an upside down L pipe that i presume pumps out the steam to the radiators. the valve connects to a three inch pipe just above the turn in the pipe with vent hole facing the ceiling0 -
The valves at the top and bottom of the glass tube should remain open, the lower valve should have a little bleeder on it, you can use this to let some water out of the lower valve to ensure that it is clear. I was referring to the auto fill valve or the manual fill valve that should be in a fully closed position but if your water level is consistently showing mid glass, then neither of these is your problem. If this vent is on the steam piping and not the return piping then it sounds as if you are making wet steam. This could be caused by any of several potential culprits. It could possibly be a new situation that has occurred or could be a long standing piping problem that was not noticed when the vent was operating properly. You could at least for now just replace the vent but you should have a qualified professional look at your piping. Maybe posting a picture or diagram with measurements to this site would help.0 -
i have attached pictures of the bolier and the air vent. it is hard to put in context where the vent is, but basically it is attached to a pipe coming out of the back (in the picture it is half an inch to the left of the fat pipe in the middle of the bolier). this pipe goes up to about three feet over the boiler. it then turns to become parallel with the floor. however at the turn is an air vent(a close up of which is attached).
i appreciate the tips so far, but it seems like it is a matter beyond my capabilities.
with that in mind, i will contact a heat technician to take a look. at least the help here will give me a more solid understanding of the diagnosis.
would anyone be able to recommend a suitable pro in the south shore region?0 -
