steam or hot water

I am remodeling my house in Providence, RI. I have an exisitng steam boiler that is old and near death. I would like to reuse the exisitng radiators and buy a new hi-efficeincy hot water boiler. I am a novice so I do not know what the BEST solution out there is.

Are there differnet types of piping I can use (black Iron, CPVC, flexible etc.)?

Is hotwater the best solution given the info I have provided?

Does anyone know a good mechanical contractor for residential in RI?

You're steam system would have to be a two pipe system to even consider converting it to a hot water system. Click on "find a professional" to see if anyone from here is close to you.

    Stay with steam

Replace the boiler with a new steam boiler. Make sure the rest of the system works properly. Get Dans books on steam so you'll be an expert. Install thermostatic radiator valves on each radiator and you'll have a very good system.

    I'll second that

    or third, fourth, etc etc.

There are so many pitfalls to this type of conversion that it is of questionable value. Stay with steam.

If there are two pipes connected to each radiator, and no air vents on the radiators, it's probably Vapor. This was the Cadillac of heating in its day and is still one of the best systems out there. Restore yours and it will give you years of efficient, trouble-free comfort.
