Boiler burner replacement

I have a levittown ranch with a wall hung ge boiler and beckett gun. I need to replace the boiler but i do not know what btu rating it is. I was considering 2 possibilities. one would be a toyotomi on demand water heater om-180 with a taco x-block to provide domestic hot water with no water storage tank. I like this setup because of the space savings. the other setup would be a peerless 3 section boiler of which size I dont know (either 103,000 btu or 131,000 btu) and a peerless partner 50 gallon indirect hot water tank in the closet under the stairs. I have 3 heating zones. I want to use a whole house circulator (size?) and 3 zone valves ( type ?) and a fourth zone valve (type ?) for the domestic hot water. I would like to make the first setup work if possible. The toyotomi is a 148,000 btu on demand hot water boiler. I have 2 low flow shower heads, a bathtub, clothes washer and dishwasher. my main concern is weather there is going to be enough hot water by using a fla t plate heat exchanger instead of the storage tank. Also can you tell me the best way to pipe the system with the single circulator and the four zone valves. I appreciate your time and any help you can give me.

boiler burner replacement
Have a 40 year old Weil Mclain CI boiler with 20 year old Carlin CRD burner,Burner needs to be replaced, also have 30 gallon, 12 year old oil fired HW heater. Turn boiler off during summer. WM said ok.
1) Should I replace the boiler? WM says that it is still ok and better than new. Tend to agree.
2) If HW htr goes, will consider indirect storage tank w/present boiler.
3) The big question is what or whoes burier to buy. Have taken Beckett seminar and the NX burner looks good but I feel there is not enough field time.
I have done all installation and maintenance, have instruments, but lack current experience with available products.
Thanks, Carl0 -
Carl...
My gut tells me to replace the boiler/burner as a unit, cold start control, stub out for future DHW and redo the near boiler piping.
At 40 years of age that puppy is tired and she already has had one replacement burner. Chances are good that most of the fittings, valves and flow checks are also 40 years old, and that the system circulators are piped on the return side.
I think that a new replacement, proper piping and Rhomar chemical water treatment will give you a marked increase in thermal efficiency.

Carl, is this
a hot-water or steam system?

System is HW. All controls, circulators and valves replaced in 2001. System is piped with circulators pumping into boiler.

Cold Start
I'm suprised WM said cold start is ok on this boiler, it is one of the worst to clean when it is cold start and usually plugs if left off all summer. Why do you feel you need a new burner? I would save and replace the system with a package including an indirect water heater. With an indirect the boiler will be used all year keeping some heat to it. Now you will only have one system to maintain instead of two and indirect tanks last much longer than direct fired.

Hmmm
is that one of the 65 or 66 series? Is the burner a Carlin 100CRD?

Boiler is WM 62 series and burner is Carlin CRD 100.
Burner motor has a squeel, helped by more oil.0 -
Instead of the NX
I'd use the AFG or Carlin EZ, or maybe a Riello. All can produce more static pressure than the 100CRD, which is important in those tighter boilers. The NX is not yet available for retrofit as far as I know, which means Beckett is not really sure how well it will work in those applications. And believe it or not, some brand-new boiler designs have just come out using the AFG rather than the NX- the Burnham MPO and Peerless Oil Pinnacle are two such units.
Installing and tuning an oil burner is really a job for a pro. A real pro will have some pretty sophisticated digital combustion analyzing gear, which will show what's happening right on the screen. There are no Beckett or Carlin OEM specs for the W-M 62 series so one would have to start from scratch. Your 462 may have originally had a low-speed flame-retention burner such as a Sunray, I've seen a few of these still around and replace them when I can.
A modern flame-retention oil burner that is properly installed and adjusted WILL NOT generate soot.... period. If it does something is wrong- most often the person "servicing" it.

Boiler Repalcement
Have decided to replace entire boiler, burner and oil fired HW heater with either Weil-McLain Gold series/Beckett AFG/ indirect water heater OR Ultra Oil /Becket NX burner/ indirect.
Ultra seems the choice but it is new and I am looking for help with choice. Also, any thoughts on Advanced Service Module.
I would appreciate any thoughts, opinions or concerns.
Thanks,
Carl

Way to go Carl!
I really feel that you have made the right decision to go all new. Weil McLain is not my main boiler line, but if it were, I would jump right into the Ultra/NX/DHW/Advanced Feature Module package.
You will get a 3 pass boiler, a decent burner, a really good water heater and a nice controls package giving you reset capabilities and DHW priority etc. Congratulations!

i have a f-3 riello on the 50 year old piece of iron
i would really like one of those new peerless pinnicales....condensing oil fired boiler... i wonder if i could step fire it with some fancy relays..... the WeilMclain ultra i think is worth the dollar buh perhaps a smaller boiler would match the heat loss.....see if there is a wholesale plumbing distributor with one of the Pinnicals Carl. it might be a better deal.0 -

If you're in the Levittown on Long Island
call Meenan Oil and ask to have Ron Jr. do the work. I've never seen anyone do these hanging GE replacements as well as he does.
