Heavy load/material handling

I never really have been that smart about moving heavy stuff, so I've been hiring the local towing company. They have all kinds of wreckers, straps, chains and other gear, and they know how to use them. It's worth the cost to me.

Of course there are always those other times when I have to call in several very large friends. One tool that I learned about from them is a rolling floor jack designed for 4-wheelers. Good for rolling boilers from the far end of the basement to the bulkhead stairway.

    Material handling/heavy loads

Just curious how you all handle the heavyweight materials in the business. Not only lifts, straps, etc but how do you deal with homeowners/generals on this topic.

I was talking with a plumber the other day who will not sell a tub that is not one of the composite/fiberglass types. If the homeowner insists, he has them provide the tub and get it into place before he pipes it up. He considers it a career threatening issue. What do you all think?

    Since I am a

small contractor moving heavy stuff is of concern to me. I sometimes have a helper for moving heavy stuff, but not always. I am thinking of looking into those motorized hand trucks for stairs. I also saw a little crane for the back of a pick up truck. A/C units are getting bigger and heavier, and I'm getting older and weaker. Bad progression for me. :) WW

If you don't have a strong back...

you have to have a creative mind. I agree with WW, I too have concerns at safely moving heavy equipment. I've used engine hoists for compressors, pallet jacks, piano jacks and just the good ol' fashion j-bar and steel pipe rollers. I have had the good fortune to watch a few house and building movers and it still amazes me when I see them lift and put wheels on a 2 story house and just drive away with it!
I recently got a lot of practice moving a boiler casting/base out of a very small equipment room. I used rollers and a rented pallet jack to swap out an under warranty, leaking casting with a new one. Then a month later I did it again, as the new casting leaked at start-up and I waited a month for it's replacement. Good thing they had three boilers and we had a mild winter.
The local rental store has a variety of lifts and things to save your back. Best Regards

    Let's see

if I got this right. You want the customer to buy and set the equipment and then you'll come and run some plastic pipe? Give me a break!
