The customer complaint was that he was getting hot water through his cold water piping but after a little while it ran cold.
We were the 3rd Plumbers on the case.
Amtrol HW maker, seperate zone off an oil boiler with a total of 4 zones using circs. Maintaining low limit at 160*.
Amtrol told him to install a check valve and expansion tank on the CW. They did! No help. We ran the cold water upstairs, got a bunch of hot water then cold. But the cold water piping in the basement stayed cold. Deduced that the problem was not in the basement but local to the 2nd floor bathroom. Found that the MBR shower had a Moentrol shower valve with 2- diverter valves for the shower head and the body side sprays. The HO kept the Moentrol open and used the diverter valves as on and off controls. We shut the Moentrol and stopped the gravity convection of the hot through the cold piping. Problem solved RIGHT? WRONG! Now the HO is complaining about the long wait for hot water to the second floor. Some days Ya just can't win.

    Easy fix

    Been there, done that :)

Sell him a Grundfos recirc setup. You can install the bypass under the lav.

    circ. line

give him a price for a properly sized circulation return line like should have been installed in the first place. that should shut him up. get paid for the service call first.
