the white panel with the white boiler. Simple lines. Very elegant. You should be pictured standing next to it dressed in a tux drinking a flute of champagne. Seeing the Glo Core brings back memories. Most of them bad. I only installed 2 but boy oh boy nothing but misery. The last surviving one was in a house that was demoed last year to make way for a townhouse community. Every day I drove by I silently cheered. One thing that Glo core did that I think has merit was the air filter on the incoming air. A pain to keep up with but not without benefits. WW

Ma. approval.....
Thanks Boss! As soon as Ma. approval was O.K.'d, the job was sold.
This is a very nice piece of equipment to work with. The directions are fairly well written, and after attending the "roll out class" at the Buderus facility more than 6 months ago, I still remembered most of the pointers given.
This will be serving 6 fairly large cast iron radiators, and 1 new panel rad.,all with TRV's and constant circulation. The PDV will be hidden behind the wall but still accessable. I wanted to keep the front as uncluttered as possible to make it look nice.Last pic. is what the GB has replaced. Good riddance to it!
When the job is finished, I'll provide the numbers. Thanks again Scott. I'm so lucky to be able to do this kind of work. Chris0 -
Nice Install!
Mounting the whole assembly on a white board is a great way of making it stand out from the rest of the basement. I like the piping arrangement, along with what I presume are extra fittings to allow the retrofit of an indirect tank later on. Presumably, those pipes will be attached to some emitters at some point, right?
... now I have finally seen what a fabled Glow-Core is... Like the blue-ray, complete heat, and some other products, they seem to be universally disliked.
Anyway, congrats again on the clean install, the nods to the service tech (i.e. temperature gauges, indirect fittings, etc.), and for posting some pictures of this new addition to the North American market in the wild.
If there is one question I have, it's the location of the concentric vent... how far above ground is it? From what I can tell, the rubble foundation that usually denotes where the soil is on the outside points to just a few feet of clearance.0 -
GB
Nice, neat work Chris. We have yet to install a GB but I'll have to check it out. I'm surprised the Glow Core was still running. -DF

Constantin,
I AM the installer, and the ground clearence on the Concentric vent is about 20" off the ground outside the foundation. The ground slopes from the front, upward to the back. The old terminations went through the sill, and were a bit too close to the basement casement window for my liking.
The fittings valved out on the manifold ARE for an indirect. The homeowner had the 50 gallon gas fired appliance replaced about 3 years ago, so I just figured the few extra dollars will save him some dough down the road.
Thanks for the comments. Chris0 -
Beauty
Hey Chris , wanna come down here and give my employers a pep talk on the benefits of high end equipment ?
Does the concentric PVC pipe come in preset sizes or can you cut it to size ?
Nice simple install for a change , huh Chris ? Do you guys track gas comsumption compared to the old system ? I'm always interested in how much fuel is saved compared to installing a normal atmospheric boiler . How efficient were those type of wall hung you took out ?0 -
Chris, that's great foresight...
... and I sure hope that the homeowner is as appreciative of the great skill you show in the layout, plumbness, etc. of the whole install. Objects of heating beauty don't have to just come in the 3-temperature, 15 zone-circ, stainless diamond-panel variety. It's the little touches like a coupling in the gas line ahead of the GB that show an obvious regard for the details that separate a good install from a great one.
So, a tip of the hat to you and have a great weekend!0 -
Thanks Dan and Ron,
Ron, I wish I could tell you the difference. The GlowCore didn't run for most of last winter. Everytime I got it going, something else would fail. It finally sounded like the blower motor was about to bite the dust. Skreeching like a banshee, it was! Pissed the homeowners dog off too much, so he shut it down.
Against my better judgement, I took the burner assembly out to check the spark and flame proving rods. The gasket under the burner assembly stayed pretty much together, but it never ran right after that. The coil of the heat exchanger was compltely packed with crud, and it would make too much heat as the pump tried to keep up with it.(the coil is a bit smaller than 1/2", and finned like an Amitrol coil)
The noises that came from it made me nervous, to say the least.Bubbling and banging until it shut off on high limit. The circulator checked out fine, thanks to a system by-pass, but the flow through the coil was diminished enough to be scary. Like I said...Good riddance. A fine concept but not in this situation. (yes there was a T-Y filter seperator in the return piping, and it was always clean!) Chris0 -

A little background on this Glo-Core.
The owner was my old nieghbor and a great guy. When I moved across the street I would see the exhaust puffing out of the side of the house. As we got to know each other he called me for service work and once I was down in the basement, well, I could'nt help look in awe at the Glo-Core. Wow ... look at the size out it. Wow ... how efficient.
Then one day I read an article by this guy who Really seemd to know aht he was talking about, Dan Holohan. He thought the GlowCore could be a really cool boiler. I thought " WOW, thats the boiler across the street ... cool ".
Then Dan had a change of heart and that made me read alittle more, and talka little more on the wall ( which was new to me at the time ).
The more I looked into this and the more I talked to Wallies ... The more I started telling my good friend next door " It only a matter of time" .
" This is the year Mike ". " Dump It".
It never seemed to be in this budget.
Then last winter ... Trouble started. Chris went down and did his best. He was on the phone to Texas ... Canada ... but most importantly to our man in Rhode Island ( Timmie ).
Mike ( the owner ) finally understood when I had Timmie on the speaker phone and I said " what do you think Tim ? ".
" Dump it and run " is as close a paraphrase as I can remember .
Here we are with a new GB. A perfect fit and Chris doing a really neat and clean install. Fuel wise, Mike won't notice that big a difference, but comfort with the RC control and TRV's going, should really be sweet.

Congrats, Scott & Chris!
However, I would like to ask you to change your mind regarding the gas usage monitoring. I know, I know, you'd rather worry about excursions to Crane's beach, the backyard BBQ, but please hear me out...
That glow-core has no modulation built-in, IIRC. If that is the case, here we would have a perfect example to compare one condensing boiler to one condensing & modulating boiler in the same setting. Adjust the HDD, and you should have as level a playing field as possible. At least the AFUE is taken out of the picture.
I have heard from people I respect that modulation doesn't do anything to gas consumption. I have a hard time believing that and even datapoint to hang a hat on would make a great difference. So, pretty please, let us have a peak at the consumption numbers next year when the unit has had a couple of months to prove itself. Cheers!
PS: For some reason my browser made me Tim McElwain. Presumably, the different writing style was a dead giveaway that something was wrong. Anyway, that's been corrected, sorry for the confusion. CvW0 -
Thank you J.C.A.
Thanks for the kind words and posting the pictures. Thank you for taking the time to attend training, reading the manual and doing nice neat install work.0
