Pilot

... no spider has ever built her summer home over a lit pilot.

    Pilot Light

Here is a stupid question. During the off season is it better to leave the pilot lit on the boiler or should you turn it off in the summer and spring?

I like to keep them lit

it uses virtualy no gas and does help to keep things a little dryer, helps keep corrosion down

    Pilots

When equipment went to spark ignition their efficiencies were given an extra 3%-5% efficiency rating. Pilots can use 1000 BTUH or more. This would be close to 3,000,000 BTU during the summer months. There is a 1000 BTU's per cu ft of gas. This would amount to 3000 cu ft of gas which ain't free. Standing pilot actually create more corrosion in the summer because any time you add heat to a chemical reaction you increase the process. I can think of cheaper ways to kill spiders.

I would rather see people turn the pilot off during the summer, in addition to the energy savings I never saw a peice of heating equiptment soot up during the summer when the pilot was off, also at the beginning of the heating season someone has to at least pay some attention to the heating system to get it going perhaps then an often forgotten system might get a little preventative maintenance
