Isocyanene Block Home-Boiler,HVAC & Pour-PGP

Just finished the lightweight concrete overpour on the ICF block home...The Vitodens 8/24 boiler and V100 DHWTank are installed. We'll fire the system in several weeks, after the overpour has dried.
We used a variable speed A/C air handler with an Aprilaire media filter for large particulate removal. The owner will install a TFP filter someday.

As usual, your work is outstanding!
Between the Mupro clamps, the plumb pipes, and the propress fittings, and clean wiring what is not to like?
I really like how accessible all components of this system are in case anything ever needs to be serviced. The LLH is a joy, as are the temperature dials that show any visiting tech just what is going on.
The sheet-metal work on the AC is beautiful as well, though I wonder a bit what the flexduct is doing up above it. Is it properly supported? It looks a bit unhappy...
I have the feeling that this homeowner is really going to like their home. All that research they did specifying the home components and finding excellent resources to get the system installed is going to pay off big-time.0 -
hey Paul
Didn't you get a little nervous when you first saw the spikes the gyp finishers wear?
Great looking work. Need some help? I'll fly someone out for a month or so....

More than nervous...
Jeff, I usually use another sub, but the spec was concrete, and they stepped on the tubes many times. I suspect the O2 barrier is compromised each time. I'd be interested in Wirsbo's take.

Not flexduct
Thanks for the kind words, Constantin....The supply ducting is wrapped in R5 foil insulation. It's hard to see, but being under the stairwell, we had to do some tricky ductwork to make it work, and comply with the engineered plan. We only use flexduct for the last 3 feet of supply ducting, for sound attenuation. All sheetmetal is "pookied" (duct cement)and wrapped with insulation. The supply and return plenum have interior insulation and the return has turning vanes.

What is in your light weight mix?
Can it be poured a thin as 1-1/2" without severe cracking? Is it less than 15 lbs per square foot in 1-1/2 thickness?
Be nice to have a mix like that, delivered by a local redimix company.
I'd prefer a concrete mix to gyp based, for a thin slab, if that is possible. especially if it can be handled with a small grout pump like that.
Nice work, as always!

TEC
The floor was poured by TEC. 11/2 concrete with additives mixed in the hopper. It uses #1 pea gravel. I'll forward the website of the company. There's terrazzo being applied for finish in 70% of the home. The tile guy demanded a concrete substrate, not gypsum.

Hi Paul,
I would love to see the burner cycling with that low mass boiler and high mass indirect. Do you have flow-checks on both supply and return of the indirect's coil? Do you have a thermostatic tempering valve on the DHW output?
With a wide enough differential on the indirect's aquastat, you may only have 2 or 3 boiler fires a week. :-D

Check Valves
The Vitodens 8/32 does not require check valves on the DHW tank coil. The internal pump does the work. Yes, there's a tempering valve at the DHW tank. Viessmann likes the tank to be set at 140 and tempered to 120. (For sanitary reasons) The owner has children, so I suspect the water tank will need recovery at least 1-2x per day.

haha.. ICF and thinslab... what's your SWT requirement, about 85 degrees? That Vitodens is going to be one happy camper. Nice job paul!!0 -
Hi Paul,
A check valve in the pump doesn't stop single pipe gravity flow. That would need a pair of checks right at the tank.
I run my indirect at about 165 with a differential of 40 degrees so it has to drop to 125 degrees before the boiler kicks on. Even thou the tank is only 42 gallons, I get less than 5 firings a week usually. I have the boiler piping insulated too.

Thanks....... Bob0 -
HVAC
A. Std variable speed AHU. Carrier thin-line condenser; exhaust fans are Panasonic. Durodyne control center for economizer and whole-house fan interlock.

C/V
The 6/24 or 8/32 Vitodens does not require check valves on the Indirect DHWTank coil. The built-in diverter valve within the unit prevents gravity ghost flow.
