    I would consider...

... the SlantFin heat explorer to be a pretty good free program for heat loss, HVAC-Calc to be a solid program to do air-based heat gain/loss calculations, and Wrightsoft's integrated suite to be the gold standard for all HVAC work. Naturally, the Wrightsoft suite is also the most expensive option, with the steepest learning curve.

    As for book-keeping, I like Quick-books a lot - they have a contractor version.

    software

We use lots of software here. The tricks are to balance what you need your software to do with what you can afford. Look for "modular" systems that you can add to later as the need and funding become available. We run Wintac for scheduling/service Quick Books for accounting, wright-soft for loads and designs etc. Take for instance the right-suite commercial. You can order the basic version which will do the loads for you and down the road add to it with say the quote module or the duct design modules. Don't strap yourself to get the bells and whistles you don't need.

    We use QB,

    Quick Books Pro.

Payroll's a snap, billing, cake, A/P, a snap and cost minimal.

Costco has it for ~$200. After 3 years, you'll be forced to update the version. The updates typically run ~100. You're then good for another 3 yrs.

I am currently running my 5-man heating biz on it AND a completely separate biz for my consulting and teaching gig with I=B=R schools.

Having designed and installed thousands of business "systems" while working at NCR many years ago, I should have a better handle than most. QB's does it for me.

    Plan 'B' would be Peachtree.
