$$$ advise

Just got a quote on a new boiler. $6500 installed. I want to install a weil-Mclain Gold CGs gas boiler with direct vent. I can remove the old boiler and position the new one in place. I really need to save money on this. I was not supplied with the BTU that needs to be installed. It is not possible to see what's on the ols unit. My question is how do I determine the BTU for the boiler. When I got the quote they counted each section of the stand up radiators and measured all the base board. Any help would be appreciated...thanks...Jim

Slant Fin Explorer 2 heatloss software . You can either download it or get it shipped on a cd . Best of all , it's free .

Jim, don't use the guys who gave the estimate.

If they counted sections of the radiators and length of HWBB, they don't have a clue. If the guys who put in the radiators and HWBB oversized the stuff, they would have also oversized the boiler - or, the boiler may have been sized for a domestic hot water "load" that with a tankless, would likely be 100,000 just for that alone, while the house may only need half that for proper heating.

Thee is no substitute for doing a room by room - or whole house method heat load calc. You CANNOT size the new boiler based on the radiation that now exist, be it hot water rads, or hot water baseboard.

Lose those guys. If you're going to attempt this yourself, I urge you get the Slant Fin freeware, or pay one of us to do a heat load calc. If you plug in your zip code up top where it says "Find a Professional" you'll do just that.

Good luck. Please let us know how you make out.
