Im sure there is a place on the web where people can find professional home inspectors in much the same way home owners can find heating professionals on this site.

Does anyone know of such a place?

Here's one that seems comprehensive as there are actually three in my general area. Others gave none even close.

Yup!

I couldn't agree more! This mere homeowner passed the 120 question/1 hour online certification exam for NACHI in 19 minutes with an 84... and (allegedly) well ahead of the average. With some additional carpentry vocabulary, I'd probably have done even better.

But despite all the things I went through/learned as a result of my home reconstruction project, I would object if someone called me a competent home inspector.

So, I would take a close look into what it takes to become a member of a particular organization... Like many licenses/awards/certifications, the paper they're printed on may have its best use in the smallest room of the house.
