Tankless coil vs. Indirect

I've found that a "cold start" with indirect is not really a "cold start" the boiler stays warm enough between cycles. I don't think I ever saw one drop below 100 degrees even when nobody was home all day. It will recover very quick and they will have enough hot water to open a car wash.

Tankless coil vs. Indirect
I just converted my sons Weil McLain SGO-3 steam oil boiler w/ tankless coil to a hot water boiler (with the necessary components). I still debating whether to add a hot water booster tank to the existing coil to smooth out the temperature flucuations in hot water delivery, or to make the boiler a cold start boiler & install a Super Store 40 gal. indirect. The down side of installing am indirect is to have to heat the 15 gal. of boiler water from cold every time you need hot water. What do you guys think?0 -
coil vs. indirect
It's hard to beat a indirect water heater for efficiency. The SGO3 converted to hot water will make all kinds of domestic hot water. Don't worry about cold start...the sooner you start thinking "demand start" the quicker you'll get over the temp drop...go for it...we do it all the time.

That may be true in the winter when the boiler is cycling for heat but not in the summer when the heat is off. I have had customers ask why they have more hot water in the winter then in the summer. The reason is they have a cold start boiler. I prefer to install warm start boilers by puuting on dual aquatat and setting the low limit for 100 degrees. This will give better recovery rate and help prevent boiler fouling adding to more years of trouble free operation.0 -
I like dual aquastat too
jus tdid a weil mclain gold with a cold start, but its heating only, no domestic hot water I do not mind it for heating only, but do not like to do taht for indirects, I think the temperature swings are too great and your wasting alot nmorte heating up all that water everytime you need some more hot water.0
