Hi Steamhead,
Thanks for all of your help and posts.
My mains are short. About 15 ft of 2" pipe to the right and about 20' to the left.
The original thread was posted around 2/5/2005 to which you replied and suggested the vents.
I posted under dave at the time when there was just too many Daves posting.

    Boiler Project

    Pictures as promised

This phase of the "project" is almost completed. Just have to get some pipe hangers and put the insulation on.
I also added two Hoffman 4A vents to the ends of the mains (yeah - the strainers are overkill but I had them laying around).
I'm considering replacing the 90 degree elbows on the returns, just before they drop, with tees so that I may add vents here also. The "original" vent was a Vent-Rite #31.

I will be adding two radiators to the system. A small one for the 2nd floor bathroom and a larger 12 section for the master bedroom in the converted attic.

There will also be a 4ft baseboard unit added to the living room under the bay window. Unfortunately there is little room for a radiator and the former homeowner replaced the original radiator with cast iron baseboard - yuck!

I wish to thank all of the professionals on this wall who have knowingly & unknowingly helped with this "project". Your names are too numerous to include here but without your input - my boiler/system would still be screwed up!
I come here almost everyday (Dan said he likes lurkers)and learn alot from your posts.

Thanks Dan for a wonderful site!

I remember the milk crate burner

It is nice to see that steam heat not only provides loads of heat but also hours and hours of fun entertainment, as you've been having with your delightful boiler.

Thanks for posting the pictures and for enjoying this wonderful website as much as we all do. Too bad winter is such a long way away.

    That's quite a difference

but Hoffman 4A vents? These only work well on real short mains- how long are yours, and what pipe size? (sorry, can't remember from your old threads, and they didn't come up in a search either).

    That explains

why I couldn't find it in the search! With those short mains you should be OK.

    Fun

You can ask my wife how much "fun" she heard from the cellar!
    LOL.
It was interesting to say the least but that Ridge power head (borrowed from work) made cutting/threading the 2" and 1-1/2" pipe easier.

    I'm sure

she will take note of the reduced fuel consumption. Be sure to also let us know how much it went down. If you really want to make your results as accurate as you can, you can download degree-day figures at the following link, and calculate how many therms you used on each degree-day:
