NYS Workers' Comp Board

Being the clerk of our township, I get involved with elections, both in training for my self and election workers and also setting up and running elections. (Primaries coming up Aug 8th, if you don't like the scum vote'em out)

I have to say the biggest boondoggle and mis use of taxpayer funds I have ever seen has to be the HAVA or Help America Vote Act. Literally Billions and Billions of your $$.$$ have been spent buying new equipment that is supposedly idiot proof. {We all know that idiot proof only exists in laboratory conditions, not out in the real world.} All the clerks in our county recently attended traing, and picked up our new touch screen voting machines designed for handicapped people. Every voting jurisdiction in the USA received one of these machines that cost THOUSANDS of dollars each. To illustrate the sheer lunacy of this policy, there is a jurisdiction in Texas with only 8, yes eight, registered voters. They received one of these. I feel that spending that kind of money on what is nothing more than a politically motivated issue is nothing short of a sin. Especially when we have people in this country going without health care, adequate shelter, and even food and water.

It just frosts me to see how little common sense is used, or maybe even available by the politicians and the entrenched masses of supporting bureaucrats. There are a lot of these people who seem incapable of making a sound and responsible decision.

When you go to vote this year (hopefully in both the primary AND the general election) take note of all the new gear that your money has purchased because of hanging chads and folks who can't figure out how to push a pin through a piece of paper. It's disgusting!!

PS: Don't get me wrong, I'm all for everyone voting because it's not only their right but also their responsibility and duty. We have an old gal that comes to every election here without fail. She refuses to vote absentee because that would somehow be dishonorable to the process and to her. My election workers help her every step of the way and always have. What's wrong with that? I don't get it........

Sorry to make a political thing out of this but...........

IF YOU DON"T LIKE IT, GET OUT AND VOTE!!

I'm with Hunt. Get rid of ALL of 'em and start over.

Just spent 45 minutes arguing with the folks at the NYS Workers' Comp Board.

Gov't employee: "We need a letter stating......."

Me: "I sent you that letter last year."

    Gov't employee: "No you didn't."

    Me: "Yes, I did."

Gov't employee: "We don't have it on file.....oh...wait.....here it is."

Gov't employee: "OK, you owe us $7000.00."

    Me: "For what?"

Gov't employee: "It's a penalty for not having coverage on your employees."

Me: "I had no employees for that time period, read the letter."

Gov't employee: "We have no such letter."

Me: "You just said you did"

Blah, blah blah, on and on for 45 minutes.

FINALLY, "Oh....you are exempt......have a nice day." Click.

I wonder if there are business owners out there that just send a check anytime a Gov't agency says they owe one??

Just venting. Stuck in the office today.

    NYS sales Tax...

Same thing happened to me. Received a letter stating that I owe for the year and that it is late and accruing massive penalties. I called and told them I paid in full and have a cancelled check. Faxed the check, but they said I was still responsible for late fees...?????????????? I really have better things to do with my time!!!. Even with the check in their hands they have the cahonies to insist on late fees.

"I....................LOVE NEW YORK", come on sing it with me

    Hey Mark

In a way, a funny story. I got a chuckle from it.

I say the quicker we get rid of government, the better :o).

Way back when in CT I was trying to get my S-1 license. The state said my school was not accredited. What I had to do was get a copy of the course list from my school, bring to a state accredited school, get a letter from them saying that they did not offer any additional courses that I would need, and bring all this back to the state. I went through all this crap and brought it all back to the state labor guy. He glanced at my paperwork, saw the name of the school I went to, and said "Oh, they are a state accredited school". I'd have shot him, but the paperwork would have delayed my licensing.

    Idiotproof...

Forget Idiotproof, Steve. R&D never ceases; they will always build a better idiot.

I was a Deputy Election Commissioner in my city. Amazing what we learned about ballot security and how easy is is to do.

Democracy is not a spectator sport!

    I feel your pain, Mark....

Some public servants are incredible resources but the one you ran into defines the stereotype... Thank God they only work through Wednesday! :)

I had a situation where the DMV would not renew my registration because of unpaid automobile excise tax. I called to look into it but had to appear in person.

The bill was for my ex-wife, for her car at her address where I never lived... I asked to transfer all of that back to her given that I had never lived there, had no title to the car and had no responsibility for payment or not...

The clerk told me -with a straight face and remarkably no irony- that she could not do that without my ex-wife's permission.

I told the clerk that no one got my permission to put it in my name and could she please use the same logic and approach used to put me on the hook and take me off it?

Then she asked me to prove that I never lived at that address. I told her no more than she could, how do you prove a negative? She called the supervisor because I was being "uncooperative".

Fortunately I knew the supervisor from my work on the Election Commission and she straightened it out. Had I not been so lucky...

Amazing how we all pay in time and aggravation for the clerical errors of others which have the force of law...

Just venting but I needed that!

    Thanks Mark-

My wife got a call a few years back fron NYS sales tax. They informed her that she has been filling out the sales tax forms wrong since 1989 and they figured we owed them about 300K.

It took about a week to get a lawyer on the phone from NYS. She made everything good..

    Thank God
