Andrew: Did you ever install the EFM stoker? If so, how do you like it?

Greg: Can you tell me how you like the Anthratube?

I'm researching pros & cons of:
Keystoker
EFM
Axeman-Anderson Anthratube
Alternative Heating Sys. Coal Gun

Anybody else have any knowledge of these units?

Thanks
Brian

Reposted under coal boiler heading I thought it might get more attn this way. I want to install an EFM 520 coal boiler with my Crown freeport oil boiler. I'm looking for info on piping arangments (schmatics and pictures) and controls. I would like the coal boiler to be the primary and have the oil kick on only if the coal goes down for some reason. I would like to use all the existing zone and circulator piping that is all ready installed at the crown and treat it as a big zone supplied by the coal boiler. I searched the arcives and found some posts from people that did this (posts were a few years old)and am hoping they are still posting here. I have a general idea of how to go about this but want to fine tune the plan so I can waste less time and money. I will gladly post more specifics if needed.

    Thanks

    Andrew

    Controls

This should be very similar to integration of a wood fired boiler. This can be accomplished relatively easily with either Tekmar or Viessmann controls. Doing it right will cost a few thousand dollars, but if you make the initial investment, the system will perform flawlessly without manual controls or possible scenarios where the oil boiler heats the coal boiler.

Thanks to those that have replied, I downloaded the Tekmar catalog and will give them a call. I'm still looking for piping pictures/schematics if anyone knows of any...

ALH you say it would cost a few thousand $'s did you mean just the controls or the whole system? I already have about $4K into the coal boiler, cicrulator & piping to date. I want to do this right but I don't have thousands for controls at this point. I do have significant $ incentive to burn coal with oil @ $2.60 per gallon and coal @ $200 per ton.

    Thanks

Rooster one ton of anthrasite coal has the BTU output of 200 gals. of #2 Oil, 27,000 CuFt of NAt gas, or 306 gals of Propane. Just don't forget to factor in the effecincy rating of the appliance.

I use two separate 24 vac timer thermostats and associated wiring. My gas units could be set to come on at a lower temperture, but I don't bother. The coal unit is piped the same as the gas units with primary and secondary piping.

I have an Axeman Anderson Anthratube, which is pretty much the same as an AHS Coalgun. Both are still made today.

Keystoker is another old line company still in business.

EFM and the Anthratube/Coalgun use stokers that are fed from the bin. A big plus!

    Coal stokers

Brian, I am an EFM dealer and have quite a bit of experience with other brands.I feel the EFM is the best unit out there for various reasons.
A note to anyone considering anyone's stoker-make up your mind quickly and get your order in NOW! Last October's orders are just being filled now. This goes across the board for most makes.
