Wiring for multiple zone

My boiler is currently serving two heating zones, Zone 1 and Zone 2. For various reasons, I'd like to set it up so that whenever Zone 1 is calling for heat, it automatically calls for heat in Zone 2 as well. However, when Zone 2 calls for heat, it will only trigger Zone 2.

I'm fairly familiar with electronics and wiring from a non-heating background and know that I can do this by simply buying a 24V SPST relay, but I was wondering -- does my boiler already have some sort of built-in support for this feature? I have a small Burnham Independence and a green box which I've never opened that says "Taco" on it. Thanks.

    assuming you have

Taco zone valves, the #1 terminal is the hot lead from the tstat. You could wire in a relay with 2 sets of switches, the Honeywell R8222 comes to mind, that had a 24V coil, power the coil from the 1st floor tstat, wire both zv's from each switch separately.24V from the transformer will go to each common and the n/o contact to each #1 terminal of each ZV.

Now when the 1st fl calls it will energize the coil pulling in the switches and turning both zv's on.

Leave the 2nd fl wired the way it is and when it calls just the 2nd fl zv will open.

Make sure if your tstat has an adjustable heat anticipator that it is up all the way.

I have a similar setup for my bathrooms, there is nothing like having your baths on their own zones. Saves energy too.
