Thermostat is off, but pipes still get hot

My boiler heats both my radiators and my hot water. I turned the thermostat to the off position so as to not get heat to the radiators, but for some reason the pipes leading to the radiators are still getting hot when the boiler turns on for the hot water. The radiators do not get hot just the pipes. What could cause this?

  • has this been?

Has this been a problem all the times or just started? Sounds to me that the zone valve(s) or flo control(s) leaking, if u have them.... Even if u have them, u will get some heati migraing thru the closed valve. Do you have another flo control on return side of boiler to reduce the convector circulation?

    Ghost Flow

I agree, either flow checks are likely leaking by, malfunctioning (maybe left in "manual" or open for gravity emergency back-up?) or are non-existent.

You may need flow checks on supply and return also. A 30-inch U-trap on return (1 psig plus differential) will also suffice instead of a flow check there.

    Rather

than guessing and since you could replace every part mentioned and more and still have a problem{shorted t-Stat wires?] Why not just call someone who knows what they're doing, it will be faster and probably cheaper in the long run

    You have a friend.

he suggests call someone who can go there and deal with it. the solution may indeed be eliminating ghost flow....then again...
