Indirect storage tanks
I've sold them all for the past 30 year. I have had the best experience (read NO returns) on the Crown MS, the Vaugh and the Viessmann 300 series.
When it comes to the highest output the Triangle Tube TR120 and the Viessmann V300 Double Exchanger rule.

indirect storage tanks
I need to replace my water heater,I planned to use a indirect storage system. Tied to a Knight condensing boiler,Super store has been recommened by my plumber.
I make deliverys to a large plumbing supply in my area & the last few month I've seen the Super store tanks on the return pile, when I asked the guy about them they said they have been getting a lot of returns for defective units.
I'm not looking to bash anyones products but I'm not looking for headaches either.
Have they had a rash of problems?
Any others that I should look into?
Thanks0 -
I use Super Stor Ultra
I have had great results with the Super Stor Ultra. What type of Super Stor are they using?
The Ultra is a stainless steel tank with a limited lifetime warranty. The Contender is a glass lined steel tank with a 7yr warranty.0 -
Funny thing
I have had at least 2 Boiler mates a year that just don't produce. Mostly with the digital control. I prefer the mechanical Aquastat series. I am starting to lean toward direct vent instead.

I agree
I use the Super-Stor Ultra as our everyday " go to " tank and have nothing but good luck. I had a a leaker once about eight years ago. I would say we sell about 24 to 30 tanks a year.
Great Product

Crown MS units and Vaughn Top Proformers
I'm with a large oil company in southern CT. I sell approx. 7-10 indirects per month. My first choice would be the Crown MS fairly quick recovery. Note if you have aggressive water as from a well the vaughn would be the unit for you. The MS stainless tank is not too receptive to well water.. Crown has a tank lifetime warrenty and Vaughn has a 2yr labor// 10 tank warrenty. Check both web sites you may find this helpful.

Hope this info helps

ANDY, MOST OF THOSE TANKS YOU SEE COMING BACK TO THE SUPPLY HOUSE THAT ARE DEFECTIVE ARE USUALLY FROM GUYS WHO DO NOT READ THE DIRECTION AND DO NOT INSTALL THE SUPERSTORE PROPERLY OR MIS DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM BECAUSE THEY LACK THE INTELLIGENCE TO PICK UP THE MANUAL AND READ IT BEFORE INSTALLING WHICH IN TURMM=RN SCREWS UP THE UNIT AND THEN IT IS SENT BACK. DO YOU UNDERSTAND? DONT BASH THE PRODUCT UNTIL YOU DO A THOROGH CHECK ON THE PRODUCT. YOU ASK ANYONE OUT THERE ALL PRODUCTS ARE NOT FOOL PROOF OR PERFECT BECAUSE THEY ARE MECHANICAL.. CAPICHE0 -
defective tanks
Mike,
Wow, why are you SHOUTING? I didnt see a product trashed I see a guy asking a legitimate question looking for tradesmen experience. Did I miss something?
How tough is it to install a indirect water heater. Let me see, supply and return from boiler, cold water in, hot water out, hook up leads for aquastat, relief valve, sanitary expansion tank if needed.....Ah, your right, I could have run natural gas to it and lit the pilot (Im kidding).
Outside of putting poor quality water to an indirect, what else could go wrong? If your going to make a statement like you did, back it up with some facts will you? What are tradesmen doing that make certain indirects fail and other not?
Maybe after 30+ years in this industry I have missed something about Indirect DHW'.
Mmmm, maybe you just had a bad day at work?

I second that. Superstor ultra is our tank of choice and has been hassle free.0 -
Bold statements
Pretty rough and bold statements there. The implication that tradesmen do not read directions is ridiculous. Granted there may be a few, however that stigma is what is the problem. Talk to ANY manufacturer and you will find a defective rate of some sort that has NOTHING to do with installation. Another way of looking at it is, perhaps that supply house sells 200 Superstor tanks and 10 of another brand per year, the failure rate, be it installation, or mother nature will be higher for sure. You wouldn't be posting if you or anyone else wasn't willing or able to learn. The last time you went to a supply house training, how many contractors were there ? Please take it easy on your bold statements.0 -
indirect failure
From my experiences and what i have seen most of all the true tank failure i have ever seen where allways because theer was high water pressure and no portable expansion tank or the home had a pressure reducing valve without a thermal bypass and no portable expansion tank in other cases it was was poor performace caused by hard water which limed up the heat exchanger .It alweays seemed to me that alot of guys don't install the domestic expansion tank because they did not have it priced in and figured that it was not needed .There are of course alot of different sceniros to why tanks go but not to sound like i'm bashing anyone but i know alot of guys who do not read direction they feel there ain't enough time to review the direction .I know from my personal experiences that from places i worked the services managers would throw a price out and thought it was always unneccessary until the safety was contiunully popping or tank rupture then they would eat the portable expansion tank install to please the HO .Thermal expansion i believe is the number one killer of indirect tanks and portable expansion tanks should be installed on all domestic water systems .I firmily believe it is because as computers are used to aid in design that regular gas water heaters tank wall thicknesses are thinner then a decade ago computers are a aid to the bean counters in what they can cheapen to improve the bottom line .Sorry for the rant peace and good luck clammyR.A. indirects
Andy, I have been using the super store Ultra with the stainless tank. I had only one leaker in 4 years and the company support was superb. The problem tank was replaced and the company covered it including labor. I have had quite a few problems with amtrolls leaking from the brazing on the coil and some early style bradford whites leaking. Neither of these offered any labor compensation to the customer. Good luck.

Early Bradford Whites Leaking
My parents can personally attest to that, with stunning regularity...0 -
If...
... I had two big rooms, and was dividing the trades (all trades - not just heating) guys I know into the ones that read instructions (or anything, really) and the non-readers, I estimate that I'd need a MUCH bigger room for the non-reading group.
As for computers being the root of the problem with water heaters, I'd say not. Computerized engineering programs are just tools like a wrench or screwdriver - nothing more. They do the math that people used to have to do longhand. The engineering & math is unchanged. The engineering formulas I work with pretty much all have judgement-call values that you have to pick. This can be things like "corrosion allowance" for pressure piping wall thickness. The codes don't TELL you what number to put into the formula - the designer picks that, based on his experience. It's very possible to go either very conservative and get an overly heavy wall, or get pretty adventurous and pick a number from the other end of the scale. Magically, thinner wall pipe is now OK for the same service. You can get very different answers using the same formula for the same set of design conditions. A lot of engineering calculations (or most other calculations, for that matter) aren't as cut-and-dried as many people think they are.0 -

I Blame It On...
... the lack of illustrations0 -
And how many
years before they were finally able to correct the problem0 -
I agree
Right from the begining, I dislikes BW way of marketing as they are the best heaters and storage tanks in the field, pressuring me to buy them... Told the rep to quit pestering me as I'm a wait and see guy... I did wait and now I'm seeing early failures on both water heaters and tanks... My supply houses don't even carry them anymore as they say BW were PITA in warrenty purposes.... Now I'm seeing BW making tanks for bock commerical water heaters... Beware!0 -
How many years?
18, then it was my problem. That was 30 years ago and...wooops!
Gotta go!

Just got off the phone with new customer saying his BW combi cor tubing has failed and wanted me to replace it as it less than 3 yrs old... Asked him where's the installer, customer said he was just a handyman and may have problem with supply house,,, I washed my hands on this one...0
