Flooded Cellar

Sewer water backed up thru toilet in the cellar, heavy local rains were responsible for this problem. Water also was discharging from sink drain and washing machine drains.

What are your thoughts on capping the toilet to prevent and installing shutoffs in drains to prevent this problem in the future? Will the backup just occur in the first floor toilets and drains?

Any input would be helpful

    There

are backwater valves that can be installed on underslab piping that works as a check valve. They let drainage go out but prevent backups.

They can usually be installed on the main drain just as it enters the building and all plumbing supply houses should be able to order them in a short time frame.

It does require exposing the underground piping to be installed but for flood areas they are a must.

    Good luck,

    Any water get in burners?

Did any water get into your heating equipment burners? If so make sure you have them replaced. Your insurance shoud cover this.

All manufactures state that in case of water damage burners, gas valve and gas train need to be replaced.

Nope..all the heating equipment is off the floor
  • I've seen

I've seen many improvments made over the the year with sewer backflow valve..
One I like is with the "top tank" set up, valve will close or open automatic, depending on the water level in outside sewer pipe, great for when homeowner is not home . However, as with ALL equipment, it must be checked and mantained regularly...
